Sick of thinking about Barton, and havent seen this mentioned on the last 2 pages, but just wanted to mention that he's back in the England U21 squad. Hope he breaks through this season, his path to the first team just got a lot easier.

    EDIT: full squad -

Goalkeepers: Ben Amos (Manchester United), Jack Butland (Birmingham City), Declan Rudd (Norwich City).

Defenders: Nathan Baker (Aston Villa), Joe Bennett (Middlesbrough), Matthew Briggs (Fulham), Steven Caulker (Swansea City, loan from Tottenham), Craig Dawson (West Bromwich Albion), John Flanagan (Liverpool), Phil Jones (Manchester United), Martin Kelly (Liverpool), Kyle Walker (Tottenham Hotspur), Andre Wisdom (Liverpool).

Midfielders: Ross Barkley (Everton), Dan Gosling (Newcastle United), Jordan Henderson (Liverpool), Emmanuel Frimpong (Arsenal), Henri Lansbury (Arsenal), Josh McEachran (Chelsea), Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain (Arsenal), Jack Rodwell (Everton), Jonjo Shelvey (Liverpool).

Forwards: Nathan Delfouneso (Aston Villa), Marvin Sordell (Watford), Martyn Waghorn (Leicester City), Danny Welbeck (Manchester United), Connor Wickham (Sunderland).

HAS to step up to the plate this season. I know he's young but if he takes on Barton's role well, he'll be an England squad regular

Also what's all this about Cissokho? Been at work for the last 7 hours so missed all this about a bid, thought Pieters was our preferred choice.

Probably a more natural position for him if he takes Barton's right wing role. Looked very lively v Sunderland and he will certainly need to step up as I just dont see us getting 3 more players in now.

Read on twitter the bid was 8.8 million, then NUFCfans saying Lyon told us that was only half what they wanted for him <yikes>

Think about half of the midfielders can play on the wing though, Gosling Henderson Chamberlain Lansbury Barkley(?). All on the right hand side though.

I have to say that looks like a top midfield, especially as Wilshere is also u21

I thought Gosling was strictly a central midfielder? What makes everyone think he can replace Barton? Unless we're going 4-5-1 (which I think we should) and go with Tiote, Gosling and Cabaye in the centre.

He played RM a fair bit at Everton, even RB sometimes. Played there on Saturday as well.

can play RM and RB too. I'd still be playing him as purely a CM though

    edit: beaten by the Smudge

Ah, I wasnt sure, if thats the case I'd be open to giving him a shot, who knows if we're lucky he could be another Barton but without all the **** that goes with actually BEING Barton.

Want to see him play tomorrow in the cup if I'm honest.

Think he will. Pardew said "3 or 4 changes" and 2 of those will almost certainly be Williamson and Gosling. Probably Harper as well (I hope).
