And it could be a 2-3 season job. It will need a football genius in the Lennie / Curbs mould. Robinson and his scatter gun BS isn’t that man.
What about Lee Bowyer? Or Jacko? The new owners will have to be able to make a wise decision. It's a pity Nathan Jones probably won't want to leave Luton.
3 seasons ago I said go for Neil Warnock. He subsequently performed miracles to keep Rotherham up, and is now doing the same at Cardiff. If the new owner wanted a manager who all but guarantees a promotion charge, Warnock is your man. Nor will his appointment raise eyebrows - Warnock hasn’t got any.
Nope. Powell would galvanise a % of our fan base, who strangely enough all seem to post on one forum.
Sadly I expect we also have to forget about Curbs. I'd take him like a shot, but doubt if he's got the appetite for a second coming.
There’s probably another joke there about @baraettmattesvensson in Bromley Wetherspoons, but I won’t ..
I can understand the Neil Warnock scenario, but why would he drop back down to League One management unless he was going to be paid well over the odds? And I doubt our new owners would be willing to pay a manager substantially more than the going rate. Also Warnock's style would not go down well with all Charlton fans. It can be argued that grumbles over the type of football we play should take a back seat if the manager concerned is going to virtually guarantee a promotion, but of course nothing is absolutely certain in football. An argument can also be made for the new owners to properly back Karl Robinson (assuming they have the funds). Personally I'm not KR's greatest advocate, but despite the difficulties he has chosen to put up with, KR has mproved the first team. Even if we miss out on promotion this season - assuming it is by a pretty narrow margin - if Robinson was given proper support in the summer, something like a budget of £5-8m which would be pretty generous for the 3rd tier, could he not buy players of the right quality to build on this season's progress? I know I'll probably get criticised for sounding like SR for suggesting this, and I do recognise that our squad will be so weakened when we lose all our loanees in the summer that we will have to rely on more loan deals next season, even with a buying budget of several million. But KR has shown that he can do decent loan deals. However, I think that realistically the only way Robinson has of keeping his job is to get Charlton promoted this season - if our new owners decide to give him the chance to finish what he has started. Should the new owners be the kind who already have a definite plan in mind and want to implement it quickly, our current manager's fate may already be sealed of course. And I would think that if the new regime has a plan already defined, they will already have a specific manager in mind as well. That manager is obviously not Chris Powell, who has just returned to another Club where he had a long playing career and where he is presumably well respected. Southend could turn out to be what the Charlton job should have been for Powell - a chance to manage one Club for a good number of years, maybe even a decade or more like Curbs, and during that time gain the experience that CP lacked during his time with us. If Robinson is not part of the new owner's plans for Charlton, I hope they have a clear plan and most of all I hope they are willing to be up front with Charlton fans about what they are trying to achieve, and how they want everybody on board. When Duchatelet arrived in 2014 I think that despite problems beneath the surface with the previous owners, most Charlton fans were not very upset with them, and there was a fairly deep reserve of patience and good will towards the new ways that RD and his continental style network was going to bring (along with the welcome financial stability). We tolerated a lot of casual disrespect from KM in the first couple of seasons, and matters only became toxic when it was clear that her arrogance and unwillingness to learn and adapt to English Football was really threatening our Championship status, and that RD was not going to have her replaced despite her obvious incompetence. Now, I think that the reserve of patience and good will among our fans has been severely depleted. Rightly or wrongly the honeymoon period for our new owners will be pretty short. Whether it be back in the Championship with the difficult task of building a squad capable of consolidating our 2nd tier status, or whether we are still in League One and face the equally difficult task of building a third tier squad capable of performing like Wigan, Shrewsbury or Blackburn, I reckon our new owners will get one season of patience. It is vitally important that they don't just pay lip service to fans, but that they show they are willing to respect our concerns and not treat us like fools. The owners of CAFC are not our Lords and Masters to whom we must grovel and tug our forelocks, they are stewards of something that is far more important than a limited company, and whose fans are far more than 'customers'. I'm not saying Charlton fans should be calling the shots, but fans can always tell whether an owner is listening to them or just taking the p*ss. Respect cuts both ways - something RD and his grinning muse never understood. And senior managers, especially the CEO of course, must be people who really understand football and have the right priorities. Competitive First team Football must be the key objective, from the top to the bottom of the whole Club. I certainly never want to hear the phrase "match-day experience" ever again.
A portentous announcement over on ITTV from Global Moderator and No.1 fan Ivor May. No more Charlton games for him this season How will the Club cope with the loss of revenue ?
Let's finish off his sentence.... "I was coming down but after Saturday's result that's me probably done now for the season".....Having said that I'll 'Probably' take a play-off final ticket if we get there.
No doubt his mate Richard will sort something out for him. All things aside, it’s a wonderful piece of news.....let’s hope he keeps to his word. Did I really just say that!!!!
