An art gallery has taken down a painting depicting naked nymphs "to prompt conversations about how we display and interpret artworks".

Manchester Art Gallery took down the painting of JW Waterhouse's Hylas and the Nymphs and replaced it with a notice informing people that a temporary space has been left to start a conversation about what's "relevant in the 21st century".

The gallery's curator of contemporary art, Clare Gannaway, says it is not about censorship, but the aim is to provoke debate.

If it's even slightly related to feminism it's guaranteed to gain attention.
The media craves this type of stuff at the moment and it'll only get worse. Trivial stories becoming huge events that drag on for days and weeks.

 

Yes sure. As for my opening post, its about what is deemed acceptable. But my thinking is, if its not harming anyone, why should others stick their noses in and dictate for the rest of us.

As for the Art gallery if it really was to draw attention to whats deemed acceptable then why not on any male nudes? They know that that wouldn't gain media attention.
Same goes for advertising.
