I was pleased for Jack when he scored. I will say that I thought defensively he wasn’t good on the first half and that worries me. It is always easier to see these things when you are at the ground as it doesn’t always show up on television., but a few times he was in the wrong position and nearly got caught out. When Brighton hit a long ball forward, I’d quickly glance at the defence as the ball was just hit and he was caught underneath the ball and heading it either backwards or straight up, under no challenge. This might not be solely Javk’s Error and could be simply his understanding with Wes not being right or neither one leading.

I don’t think it’s fair to slate the fans. I’ve been to the last 4 away games, fans have been great - the team and tactics were still ****e.

One point my lad noticed in the first half that continued all game was their goal kicks... each goal kick reached just over the half way line. Each one was aimed at Murray who had dropped deep into our midfield and he out muscled a smaller midfielder (often illegally) to win the header.

    My lad said:

    1. How come nobody on the pitch tried to sort this out in the first half?

    2. Why did the management not do something about it at half time?

Lack of leadership on the pitch and off it was the answer.

Ps... he counted 11 times that Murray won a header like this and each time he did it with a Saints player’s head under his arm. How the **** could that be allowed with Mike Dean stood 8 metres away?

Did you think the fans were great last night?

I stand by my criticism of them. I thought they were ****ing awful last night. Gave up on the team very early and failed to realise the important role they play.

At away games there are roughly 3,000 (??)... well there was probably a similar number trying last night... couldn’t get heard above the groans though.

I didn’t go last night, I had to work late so watched it on TV unfortunately. I’m not saying they weren’t bad, I just don’t think they would help Shane Long win long balls in the air against Brighton’s massive centre backs.

Pellegrino cost us AGAIN last night, not the fans.

Hang on Os... I was the person who slated our fans about last night and you have come on and posted that it was unfair to slate the fans. You then tell me you didn’t go last night, so how does your comment carry any credibility?

The fans have been ****e too mate. Even at Fulham they booed, bitched and whined, and we won that one.

It's easy to keep your head up and support your team when they're winning. Doing so when everything is going wrong takes a bit of heart, something our support is seriously lacking in lately.

About 3000 is in the right area. Yes there are whingers, but expectations when seeing Saints away have always been low. We have, in my memory, always been crap away from home with the occasional OMG result. Not sure whether this plays a part, or simply that the effort required to get to an away game means fans are determined to have a good time. Or maybe it's simply tribalism. Whatever it is, supporting Saints away has generally been good fun. Usually a great afternoon/evening except when the footie starts!

At home, the tribalism thing doesn't work; fans arrive expecting us to win (I have no idea why!) and the whole culture of "supporting" is different. All my football mates report the same thing, and I know a number of Liverpool based Red fans who hate going to Anfield but travel all over the place to watch their team.

Last night, I found myself thinking about better ways of spending the evening. When I got to finishing the decorating in the spare room I knew it hadn't been a fun evening!

Your lad is pretty astute FLT. Saw same & was shouting at team, Dean all night (until Murray got subbed). Great play by Murray btw. Infuriating we didn’t have the players to sort out on the field nor manager to sort at HT. ****ing ****e really. Very disappointed Dean didn’t help but more pissed off we didn’t. Shocking how weak Jack & Wesley were.

Yep, away fans always have been a more supportive core.

If the home fans could be more supportive as a group I think it could help. Crystal Palace fans were excellent in that first 7 games of no goals, no points.

I agree. I thought the ref was too lenient and let Murray get away with so many fouls.

Some thing else about Saints is that we are too nice. I believe we are commmitted, but we don’t have a player like Murray who niggles opponents, gets in their faces and wind them up.

Palace fans are amazing. Saints support at home has had a tendency to be a bit crap for a long time. Remember "The Archers Road Whine"? Since superseded by the Chapel Snore, the Kingsland whinge and the Northam gob.

One area of discontent I note on the Northam is the frustration of those fans determined to get a OWTSGMI going being met with mixture of silence and derision from others. The question "Why did you come?" does spring to mind. All in all, the best description for our home game support is that it is pretty bloody toxic. Do the lot who whinge, moan and bitch from their arrival at the ground think that others are happy?

Didn't go to the match as was GF's b'day. So basically we played the same, had more possession but never looked like scoring many. Jack Stephens in the right place at the right time. Hoedt gave away a penalty. JWP industrious. Is that how it played out?

I agree the fans have their part to play, but I agree with what Beef said too. The players have a part to play to get us going, and we have a part to play to get them going. Neither of us are doing this.

On the topic of away fans, I do about 10 away games a season and this year I've been really surprised how we sell out, but only a handful of fans sing. We always used to get going and be quite loud but this season in particular it's as if you get looked at funny when trying to start songs and chant.

That said, I do think our home support has been better over the last few weeks, even though much improvement is still needed.

The support, however, started turning quiet and pretty awful when Puel first joined and it hasn't ever really improved.
