For me it has little to do with an anyone but Utd philosophy. We should be aiming to get as high a position as we can, and that means we want all our rivals to drop points wherever possible. By striving for 2nd we are more likely to leave Spurs behind anyway, than if we just settle for securing 4th, There's a long way to go and the end of the season is not contingent on one game tonight.
Wanting Utd to go further ahead just to make it easier for us to scrape through is not my idea of ambition.

I think some of us are missing the point. We (MITO, Enricky etc) are discussion the outcome of one single match. And which one would be better for the club. We are not settling for 4th nor are we saying we don't want the mancs to lose all their other games. That we wish the mancs to beat Spurs in this match does not mean we don't want to overtake them to 2nd place.

A spurs win (and even a draw) is very likely to keep them in the mix. While a defeat tonight and another against us is going to seriously affect their chances. But I know what people feel and no amount of argument would persuade some. As I said earlier, it is about emotion and gut rather than rationality.

MITO screaming "you only deserve 6th" at them every week probably doesn't help

We come 2nd and it doesn't matter who was or was not in the mix for 4th

How can you discuss "one single match" without considering the implications it would have on the ready of the season?

I would say that if you're concentrating purely on that one game then you're not thinking about the league. In that scenario, it's Spurs every time. What Liverpool fan wants Man Utd to win?

With a pep talk like that i'm surprised you wouldn't go 1 step further and say we come 1st and it doesn't matter who was or was not in the mix for 4th

Can't come 1st because we don't get to play City again and the teams that do are cowards like Man Utd who wouldn't even think to attack

This is what I meant and said right at the outset of this discussion. For most, there is no argument. They do not want the mancs to win fullstop, even if winning might have a clear benefit for us. As to that match, of course the outcome will have implications for the rest of teh season (that's why we are having this discussion !) A spurs defeat together with a defeat to us may well end their CL ambitions for next season.

But as I say, no amount of logic will persuade most of us.

James Milner insists he was happy to pass on penalty duties to top scorer Mohamed Salah in Liverpool’s 3-0 win over Huddersfield Town.

The Reds’ vice-captain had been told by Jurgen Klopp that he was on spot-kicks following Roberto Firmino’s miss in last weekend’s FA Cup defeat to West Brom.

However, Salah grabbed the ball after Emre Can had been brought down in the box. An exchange with Milner and captain Jordan Henderson followed before the Egyptian winger was given the green light to take it and duly dispatched his 26th goal of the season.

Milner told Liverpoolfc.com: “It doesn’t matter to me as long as it ends up in the back of the net.

“Mo said he wanted it and he was confident so I trust him.”

Klopp made light of the on-field debate after a commanding victory when he said he had “obviously left some space for interpretation”. The Reds boss also indicated that Salah will “maybe qualify for the next one as well”.

Liverpool have had problems from the penalty spot this season - converting just four out of eight. Firmino (twice), Milner and Salah have all missed from 12 yards, while Firmino, Philippe Coutinho, Milner and Salah have converted.

Milner reflected on a dominant display as Klopp’s side returned to winning ways after back-to-back defeats.

“It was a solid performance,” he said.

“We will play better in games but we’ve talked about how we want to be more solid at times and you can’t play free-flowing football in every game.

“Second half we probably went too much the other way and we should have gone forward a bit earlier at times.

“We can improve a lot on it but it’s the sort of performance we definitely need a few times in the season.”

We all have different views of logic. True.

I am one of 5 candidates to a board of 4 people to be formed in 4 months time. I would like to be chair or failing that deputy. First I eliminate 1 then as I am now sure of being a board member I work my way with the other 3 and others to get that top or second top job. If I fail, at least I am still a board member. It is looking at the safety net.

Looking psychologically at our team could us that are wrong not argue that if an 8 point gap opens up Liverpool in particular may rest too much thinking the job was done and implode
It is a capacity we have

    Using your analogy
After disposing of the 5th person I embark on a steady ritual of drugs, booze and sex
5th person is asked back and my life crashes
I am no longer on the board

an analogy that surely cannot apply to our team...
