Interesting article from DDF on hw many 'hom-grown' players must be in the match day squad. Here's a summary - City’s ‘homegrown’ players – 12: Angus Gunn (loan), Sean Raggett, Grant Hanley, James Husband, Jamal Lewis, Harrison Reed (loan), Marcus Edwards (loan), Louis Thompson, James Maddison, Josh Murphy, Matt Jarvis, Marley Watkins Loaned ‘homegrown’ players – 7: Remi Matthews, Russell Martin, Adam Phillips, Ben Godfrey, Steven Naismith, Todd Cantwell, Carlton Morris Players who don’t qualify – 16: Michael McGovern, Ivo Pinto, Christoph Zimmermann, Timm Klose, Marcel Franke (on loan), Marco Stiepermann, Mario Vrancic, Tom Trybull, Alex Tettey, Kenny McLean (on loan), Wes Hoolahan, Onel Hernandez, Moritz Leitner (loan), Yanic Wildschut (on loan), Nelson Oliveira, Dennis Srbeny So we have nearly as many who don't qualify and unless we lose some in the summer, we can't recruit any more. http://www.edp24.co.uk/sport/norwic...-for-manoeuvre-with-homegrown-rules-1-5373903
When you see the make up of our squad and the transfers of late it does present a potential issue. We are clearly pinning a lot of hope on the youngsters coming through to supliment the foreign legion. I think the policy could work if we keep finding gems, but if that dries up then we won't be able to afford British players of the requisit standard. Much will depend on which players we still have come next season. With these rules applying to others suddenly I can see not just Maddison being pinched, but if Hanley and Lewis continue to impress they may become hot property and with half the championship able to pay better wages, suddenly we could have a very real problem add to that Josh also and once the loanees are gone and resources in homegrown look very thin. Madders has been grabbing the headlines, but others are quietly impressing and this is where the self funding model can truely flounder. Without those players and the loanees (Though I suspect they will all be replaced with further loans) we have: City’s ‘homegrown’ players – 4(Jarvis doesn't count): Sean Raggett, James Husband, Louis Thompson, Matt Jarvis, Marley Watkins And in the loaned list you have Martin and Naismith who will likely not play for us again, Morris in particular who may not ever be good enough , with all of the others still a gamble and serious unknown as to whether next season would be too soon. So optimistically speaking we have: Loaned ‘homegrown’ players – 5: Remi Matthews, Adam Phillips, Ben Godfrey, Todd Cantwell, Carlton Morris You suspect if others in the youth team are not even getting loans yet, they are at least a season, maybe two from troubling the first team squad (Not nailed on, look at Lewis) so that bunch of if, buts and maybes would only leave us 9 eligable players, Webber get your thinking cap on! Bah!
City’s theoretical 18/19 homegrown players – 10: Sean Raggett, Grant Hanley, James Husband, Jamal Lewis, Louis Thompson, Josh Murphy, Matt Jarvis, Marley Watkins, Remi Matthews, Ben Godfrey Players who don’t qualify – 11: Ivo Pinto, Christoph Zimmermann, Timm Klose, Marco Stiepermann, Mario Vrancic, Tom Trybull, Kenny McLean, Wes Hoolahan, Onel Hernandez, Nelson Oliveira, Dennis Srbeny I've assumed Madison is sold, and all senior players on loan deals don't return, plus Tettey and McGovern leaving. Then some snap decisions about our youngsters. That's a squad of 21, with no senior keepers, a DM short and the current issues of no RB or striker cover. I think we could regularly field 7 or 8 of those homegrown players in the matchday squad, so the situation isn't too dangerous just yet. A second homegrown keeper would definitely help. But certainly something I expect the club to factor in this summer, I'd be very surprised if we don't make a couple of homegrown signings, whether on loan or permanent. I can see the risk from other clubs poaching our homegrown players, but I'd hope the sale of Madison means we could hold out for a premium on anybody else, allowing us some wiggle room for reinvestment.
Great posts General and DH and we REALLY have to hope that some of youff can 'step up to the plate', otherwise, we could be struggling and more so if some of the moneybags start 'waving cheque books' at Godfrey's agent. I take on board the comment re Morris and feel he may be offered another season on loan to see if he makes the grade.
Yes a good analysis of the situation, but I'd add Phillips, Abrahams and Jaiyesimi to next years home grown list and possibly Middleton as well. Lewis shows that DF isn't afraid to bring young players straight into the senior squad. Aarons and Ramsey could be other possible additions. Even so it's going to take some juggling to make it work, but if it means giving more young players a go, that's a good thing.
What with it only being 7 players in the squad, we can push that right to the extreme if needs be. We could field an entirely overseas starting XI, with a homegrown bench. A bench of Matthews, Raggett, Godfrey, Thompson, Murphy, Lewis and Morris covers most positions. I really don't think the situation is that much of a concern, given such an extreme squad selection is highly unlikely.
Absolutely Rick and however much JM is eventually worth, it's been said previously and I agree that I don't expect that all of the £Ms will be available to SW/DF to spend on players!!!
So, BBC extend PL highlights deal until 2022 - I wonder if we'll be seeing NCFC feature one season???? Edit - I think we will. PS - Sunderland losing 3-0 in a relegation '6 pointer' V Brum with no shots on target after 55 minutes!!! Now 3-1 with a few minutes to go. Snoddy may have snatched a victory for Villa at the death!!!
The commentator compared Snoddy's goal to Madders', but JM's goal was much better because of the nutmeg.
Very true CS. I also don't think Zimmerman got enough credit for making the interception and playing it through to Madders all in one touch.
I'm not sure Zimmermann gets enough credit for his marauding forward runs, getting into advanced positions and providing decent service in towards the front man. Not long ago Bassong used to try this sort of thing and it invariably ended in but our Christoph is a different kettle of fish. I have a sneaky feeling he'll be runner-up in the POTS voting
One of the advantages of the 3-4-2-1 is that one of the CB's can make the extra man going forward and all three CB's have contributed. There was Klose's excellent cross on to Jamal's head at Chelsea and Hanley has been popping up in the box a lot lately. Madders already has the Pots award in his pocket, but the other places are going to be interesting. Zimmerman is a good shout (having survived being written off by some early on), but Hanley is also going to be in the mix. Then there's Trybull and of course Jamal Lewis is going to be a popular choice. Hard to say really.
Competition will be fierce behind Madders, I'd add Tettey to that list too, although he and Trybull may miss out on placing due to injury absenses. Bah!
And now for something completely different - http://www.edp24.co.uk/news/politic...urn-of-safe-standing-at-carrow-road-1-5377167 I'd love to see it happen and of course it should be cheaper (though it WON'T be at CR!!)
Interesting to see the club's stance has completely changed since McNally left. He was always dead against it, after the loss of a friend at Hillsborough. I'll be getting my own experience of the German approach to it next weekend, standing at Dortmund.
What a shock. my best mate, who is a Blues fan, went to the game and said that Chelsea were just plain awful. Cracking win for the Cherries though.
