Potters Heron! This will smash our previous record transfer to pieces! Would expect such an occasion to be at Limewood at the very least!
“We haven’t spent the money burning a hole in our pocket” “Why haven’t we got a marquee signing” “Promes isn’t worth £30m” FFS. I don’t like Les and his cronies, but talk about ‘can’t win’!!!
Agree. We went into this transfer window needing a striker, attacking midfielder and a new centre back (imo) If we sign Promes after already getting Carrillo then that's a pretty good window overall. The rumoured £30m is only a problem if he turns out to be poor; it's not as if it's our own money we're spending.
I have no qualms spending the best part of 30m for Promes. It might be a little bit of an overpay, but well within the realm of reason, and he's good at football and things. If you're going to overpay, overpay for good players. A couple mil isn't a hill we should be dying on, particularly this late in the window.
Found a Russian article that had been posted on SW earlier this evening. Said we have bid £25 million, but Spartak want closer to £30 million. Says the talk's have been done through the players agent as an intermediary so would assume Promes wants to come, just about agreeing a fee etc.
You'd probably say he's worth £20-25m but with the market and January in mind, an extra £5m or so is probably expected.
In the position we're in, I'm not sure it matters if we overpay a bit. I'd be pretty peeved if we lost out purely on haggling over a few million.
Completely agree, people are far too worried about the value of this transfer, if it goes through it would be a massive massive coup for the club.
We may have to pay extra because our transfer activity over the last 18 months hasn’t been that good. Plus, the way the market is going in a few years £30m will only buy a third choice goalkeeper.
Russian media saying nothing new but we have offered him much higher wages but still stuck on fee. Either way this will over come tomorrow night.
Southampton football club I believe is ranked 18th richest club in the world? If that is so isn't it time like we acted as such? £30 mil should be nothing to a club with those riches. Come on Saints go get him..............
The question to be answered is what price do you put on staying in the EPL? It not just the loss of the TV revenue, its so many other revenue streams and not least the rebuilding of your squad when your current first team exercise their options to look elsewhere; so £30M looks something of a bargain. I am not advocating a spend, spend, spend policy like so many other clubs do (and frequently still fail); this is about EPL survival for this season and fixing other team/management issues at the end of the season.
Well it depends how risk adverse the board want to be. The 2 options are spend the £30m and we stay up (happy days) or spend the £30m and still go down (****). They may want to keep money back as a contingency plan for if we do go down rather than spending the money now.
Staying in the EPL is worth a fortune, but you still need to be circumspect with money. If paying 30 million or whatever would guarantee you would stay in the EPL, I'm sure the board would pay it, but it doesn't. They could spend all the 75 million on players and get stuck with expensive wages in the Championship. There is a balance here. Hope for the best, but plan for the worst.
Im just flitting between sites but Everton are now said to be in the mix to sign him. Could be bollox mind.
Usual knee jerk reaction...we are selling, it must be Liverpool; we are buying, it must be Everton as well. If Promes is set on coming here and that side is sorted (as rumoured) it would take some offer to change his mind....Everton aren't that big. It may make us cough up though.
