Not my cup of tea musically but I always liked her 'trashy' look. She is also a seriously underrated banjo player and fingerpicking guitarist.
Had some old 45's returned to me by my ex missus, who had a spring clean. Among them was an Elkie Brooks tune called "Our Love", from 1982, which I certainly don't recall buying, but my god that woman has a voice. On tour this year too - now who can I drag along to that I wonder?
A giant of music in the first half of the 20th Century, Folk and Blues musician Lead Belly was born Huddie William Ledbetter in Mooringsport, Louisiana on this day in 1889... His voice gives me goosebumps..

Saw them at Southampton uni sometime early 70s. Great, underrated, band with 2 amazingly strong vocalists!
Seen the Manics 6 times (I think, might be more) and each time they are outstanding. In my 31 years alive I’ve spent a long time listening to them and I’m always impressed by what they produce.
This sounds like Leadbelly was being interviewed by Alan Lomax . I have the box set of the Jelly Roll Morton Library of Congress recordings where Lomax interviewed the legendary jazz pianist. It is a fascinating listen because Morton was such a colourful character but I have to say that Lomax tends to take everything he was told without bothering to really question his subject. A lot of the comments made by Morton are now known to be inaccurate and it is a real shame that Lomax was not that rigorous. I don't know if the Lomax's were more thorough with Leadbelly or was also a notorious character. Leadbelly did a stretch for murder I believe and I think that he similarly liked to garnish the truth. To be honest, I am fascinated by these artists, not only as a music lover but also as someone who loves history. Morton in particular liked to elaborate the truth and it is not helped that he was clearly drunk during some of the interview. The unabridged interview is full of expletives and the uncensored comments abut sex are pretty shocking for 1939 let alone 2018 ! However, there are some fascinating insights such as this explaining the difference between jazz and ragtime. Thanks for posting the Leadbelly tracks.
Apologies if anyone has posted about this group on here before . Saw them live twice , utterly brilliant ( IMHO ) . Oh , and this .
Motown singer Edwin Starr was born Charles Edwin Hatcher on this day in Nashville, Tennessee in 1942, but grew up in Cleveland, Ohio.... Here is his anti-war classic #1 song...
And I just had to post this as it brings back great personal memories of Monday under 18 night on Southampton Pier underneath the glitterball and plastic palm trees...
