Hello, pilgrims. I’m sure the question everyone is asking themselves, re tomorrow’s racing, is ‘how many, I say how many, winners will that good egg, Lieutenant Henderson, have at Newbury???’ It’s a fair poser, people, as the Lieutenant will have 7 in his trench and goes into battle therefore with a decent squad. But how many will fire??? How many will be victorious, prove to be happy and glorious??? I’ve decided to have a look in order to provide my answer to the original quest. 1.20 Off 115 Percy Street is one of Mr Henderson’s lesser lights and he is yet to win in 8 attempts over hurdles (has a chase success to his name though). For a 0-120 this heat does look stronger than the norm and you would have to conclude that Percy Street would be up against it. 1.50 The Lieutenant fields 2 - Ok Corral and Whatswrongwithyou. I’ve long been an admirer of the former but a succession of injuries have restricted the 8YO to just one run over hurdles thus far. OK Corral was a comfortable 12 length winner though on that hurdles debut, back in May ’17, and despite having to concede a 6 lbs penalty all round, here, would be my idea of the most likely winner before then going on to, hopefully, compete at Graded level. The other named runner (Whatswrongwithyou) has also just had the one run over hurdles but that was a fair 2nd to a horse who has since been placed at Listed level. He is a worthy adversary. I’d side with OK Corral though. 2.25 and 3.00 The Lieutenant has no runners so it’s off to the ‘Owners and Trainers Bar’ for some bonhomie and light refreshment. 3.30 An intriguing ‘mares novice hurdle’ sees Lieutenant Henderson field 2 – Kupatana and Loveherandleaveher (not a lovely name for a mare and hardly appropriate for a chap who has recently gone down the aisle). Both mares make their hurdling bows in this contest although both, it should be referenced, have won in the old pointing field. You would be guessing as to which was the best, at this stage, but no-one handles a mare as well as the Lieutenant (they respond so well to his ‘magic hands’ and soothing words, don’t you know) and I’m predicting he will win the heat with one of his ‘dynamic duo’. 4.05 The great man is two handed again in the ‘lucky last’ with the unraced pair Morning Vicar and what I’d give the Lieutenant if I was PM, Knighthood. In fact Knighthood would be my choice as he’s a lineage that appeals. His dam was a Listed winner and she also finished runner-up in the Italian 1,000 Guineas whilst to date 3 of her foals have similarly won at Listed level. If Knighthood is a similar class then this 55,000 guineas purchase really should prove too good. Morning Vicar commands respect though and this Beneficial gelding would be the danger. In conclusion the answer is I think Lieutenant Henderson will have 3 winners at Newbury tomorrow with the ones that I’m most looking forward to seeing run being Ok Corral and Knighthood. Thoughts, people?!?
The county set are barking loudly that Mr Henderson’s ex Irish pointer KUPATANA is somewhat above average. Best odds of 5/4 tells that this isn’t exactly news but looks a decent stab for virtual money in Ron’s comp!
Was drawn to Perfect Illusion in the first at Lingdield - nice pedigree, Nathaniel - Chicita Banana (Danehill Dancer) but 11/4 seems a bit mean first time out over 12f and wearing a hood; plus there is another decently bred newcomer. It's an auction so think I'll just see what happens. Talked myself out of it
Henderson's best chance of a winner at Newbury tomorrow surely has to be Doitforthevillage in the opener benefitting from a very low hurdling handicap a whopping 26lbs below his chase mark. Ok it's not the recently appointed Lieutenant worshipped by some on the forum.
Who and why are backing BRAIN POWER in the Clarence House on Saturday! UDS is going to soon become a backable price! If he’s not already. Brain Power looked beat last time at Sandown before unseating David Mullins and that was againt a bunch of novices. UDS looked phenomenal in the Hilly Way and he will wipe the floor with him. They said the same thing about Brain Power when hurdling, he will Be this top class hurdler but got found out against proper G1 Horses and UDS Will find him out Saturday. Whether he gives Brain Power a lead which he supposedly needs it won’t make a difference UDS is one of the fastest horses in training imo and will just blow the field away
I do tend to agree. Brain Power was mightily impressive first time up but his second effort was well below par. UDS in a canter for me.
It looks like you are on the wrong one in the bumper Barney. Had a better look last night and if I was betting in the race, I am not, it would be on the Greatrex debutante.
It's no tip at aroundcevens but kaputana is owned by a guy living round the corner from me - the scuttlebutt is that it's the better of the 2 - as always sir Barney - a pleasure to hear from you and a sure way to brighten any day !!
Especially when you consider that the soft ground will be right up UDS's street. The only time Brain Power has run on soft he was well beaten in the Greatwood Hurdle off 145. Wheelbarrow job on UDS
Now that we have a fully formed market I see that the Lieutenant has 3 relative shorties at Newbury this afternoon – OK Corral (5/6), Kupatana (5/6) and Morning Vicar (5/2). I’m guessing how these 3 fare this afternoon will determine the fate of so many punters, nationwide, this afternoon. The treble at the moment is paying 10.75/1. His market second strings are healthier – Whatswrongwithyou (7/4), Loveherandleaveher (8/1) and Knighthood (10/1). Wouldn’t want to rule any of these out and the treble here pays 271/1! A combination between the 2 sets of animals listed obviously pays a ‘Liberal Democrat’ amount – i.e. somewhere in between. Arguably the most interesting in the market though is the one I readily dismissed yesterday – Percy Street and he’s now fave for the card commencer following strong support. Could the Lieutenant get 4 out of 4?!? My gosh the forum would go into meltdown if he did. I’d still say ‘nay’ in the opener but think his score will be 3 as I think he will win the 1.50, 3.30 and 4.05. Finally, the market has Knighthood as the obvious ‘inferior’ Seven Barrows horse, in the ‘lucky last’, but I still really rate this one. I’m going solely on pedigree, I’m not going to employ that terrible forum cliché ‘I’ve been told…’, and from this point of view think he’s bred to go close at a nice price.
