  1. That meal was the first proper meal I’d had all day.

Up to that point, all I’d had is some mixed dried fruit and nuts and a lot of water. I had been for my run, too.

    I’m back out tonight.

The only Argentinian steakhouse that I know of around here is Cau and that is pretty ****. If you want steak try the No5 Grill, that is good and is in the centre as well, which is near the Ibis that you apparently stay at.

Is that a code for the Premier Inn? <laugh>

  5. I don’t know how often you eat at Cau in Bristol, but it’s decent, and hardly cheap. The glass of Malbec I had cost me a tenner, alone!

  7. I did stay at the Ibis for a week, a couple of years ago. It’s a soulless place, and I hated it.

It was the only place I could get on short notice.

I prefer more upmarket accommodation, but you have to book the best rooms well in advance to be guaranteed getting it.

I have eaten there probably half a dozen times as people seem to like it. It is also pretty much right on my doorstep.

I didn't say it was cheap, I said it was pretty ****. You can get far better. If you are around that area of Bristol try out the Ox, that is much better as well.

  9. It was a nice wine, tbf.

There was cheaper wine on the list.

Malbec is never £10 a glass good. £10 a bottle maybe.

  11. I tend to eat in the hotel, which is silver service, or at a favourite Italian place. Occasionally, however, I like to go somewhere different.

Cau is far from being “****.”

  12. Cau has about 20 different types of Malbec, of varying vintages.

As with anything, you pay for what you get.

Unless they have some pretty top end Malbecs you are getting ripped off there, you can buy very good bottles of it for £25.

Restaurants screw people over on the wine so much.

I imagine you could probably have got the bottle for about £25 which would have been better value, by the glass is a rip off. The Malbec trend is dying off a bit which is good as it isn't all that.

"Somewhere different" but go to a chain restaurant? Next time I suggest popping a few doors along from Cau and going to Subway. They do a Steak & Cheese baguette and unlimited drinks. Reckon you could swing it for a fiver.

    Libby and luvgonzo like this.
  17. That’s always the way.

The Malbec that Cau serves is decent, and the mark up is no worse than you’d get charged elsewhere for other wines.

Pizza Hut will sell you a glass of Chardonnay for more than you could buy the bottle in a supermarket.

  18. I’m not looking for cheap.

For the few occasions I nip into Cau, I’m happy enough with that, thanks.

I'd have gone for a Chianti or a Pinot Noir myself.

The Lorca, Lorca Malbec is £11.50 a bottle almost everywhere.
