You seem keen to take offence... I'm sorry you feel that way but I think my point was clear... "My comment about the less educated wasn't referring to any individuals level of education - rather that people were inadvertently 'misinformed' or deliberately lied to as to what 'benefits' Brexit would bring i.e. those that thought it would limit immigration from non-EU countries or that the NHS would be better funded."
Surely your point as to be misinformed could apply to any and all general elections that have ever taken place in this country. They lie to us....always have done, always will do......doesn’t mean we should have every GE rerun does it ?
Me either. However undoubtedly a proportion of those who did vote for Brexit voted because of issues around immigration, and the dialogue around the vote became very polarised. Since the vote, hate crimes have soared and intolerance and overt racism has thrived. It's not a coincidence.
For sure, it’s given people a sort of confirmation that that behaviour is more acceptable. It’s like a group of football hooligans attached to a particular club. It shouldn’t reflect badly on the other fans but inevitably people generalise.
Well we do rerun the GE every 5 years and in the run up each party has a manifesto which sets out their policies. When they don't fulfil them they can be held to account - at least by those who care to do so.
Yes, a manifesto that contains lies. You’d make a good politician (and I’m not talking about the lie part.. )
I asked if you'd want yet another referendum if you got your wish and another one went against you. Stroller said he'd accept the result. It's not a difficult or loaded question. You won't say, which I interpret as you wanting to re-run and re-run a referendum till the great un-washed vote the way you think they should.
But it’s a fact Stainsey. Level of education was the single factor most likely to accurately predict how people voted, followed by age. I can post loads of links to articles from sources across the political spectrum which back this up. But I differ from some other posters in the way I interpret this. Personally I don’t think level of education is in any way an indicator of intelligence and certainly not of value to society. All it shows is that people’s ‘life chances’ differ. And in the case of this referendum everybody was lied to by both sides of the campaign, everyone’s ability to make rational decisions was compromised, and we mainly voted on emotional grounds, me included (although of course I like to pretend otherwise). I think that the difference education made to the way people voted is sadly due to the fact that ‘society’ values and rewards people with a bit of paper from a crappy sixth form college calling itself a university more than those who haven’t got one. They tend to be paid more and have less interest in changing the status quo, hence voting remain. If society isn’t working for you, why would you want to keep it the same? Unfortunately I don’t believe Brexit is going to improve the lives of those who voted for it, but that’s just my opinion and it doesn’t alter the logic of voting leave. As an example of education not equating to intelligence, I have a piece of paper from a proper university, gained in the olden days when it meant something, allegedly. I am well educated. Nevertheless I still didn’t recognise that after 20 hours with no sleep including a long flight yesterday that drinking 4 pints of Guinness followed by a bottle of red wine in the space of less than two hours and then walking out into -10C temperatures would lead to me being pissed as fart and waking up fully clothed on my hotel bed with a bit of a headache. As I have done similar things in the past (not too frequently thankfully) I clearly don’t learn from experience and, despite my education, am an idiot.
Whilst I like this post and generally agree with all you have written here, it doesn't take away from the fact that, imo, some people who voted remain look down on those who voted leave in a sneering, "we know better than you idiots" condescending kind of way. It comes across in some people's posts on here and they don't even realise that they're doing it.
The insinuation seemed, to me anyway, that ‘less educated’ means ‘less intelligent’....and I personally find that pretty insulting. If that isn’t what was meant then fair enough.
That's a Myth. I just read an excellent article on the subject and they pick holes in that theory. Agree, the average age of a remainer is younger and many more young people are at Uni now. However the older voters who voted to leave had a probably a better education than many now. It has been proven that exams/results/tests/grades are easier now than they were 40/50 years ago. Bloody hell you can get a D grade just for turning up now. Under Blairs nanny state, no one could lose or get a bad result. He had the difficulty level lowered so he could boost record results in schools/colleges/universities. So be careful what you say because 64% of over-65s voted to Leave. Many Older voters run companies or are in management positions. They have a wealth of life experience compared to some younger voters brainwashed by a Blair government.
That's certainly the way it came across from Seagull. His consequent explanation was fine, but it was worded differently to his original post.
Today's youth, like every generation before them, think they know best and anyone over 55 is a stupid old fart.
Better educated voters have got more out of the EU and now they are trying to protect their interests. London elite, for example, can hire cheap Eastern European labour to decorate their Islington house, tend to their garden, look after their children etc. A Bulgarian carpenter living in a room with eight others in Harlow can undercut any British carpenter and send their wage package home. Elite classes love the money they save. The unelected Lord Adonis must be mortified that he'll have to pay British workers a decent wage post-Brexit.
It’s not a myth. It’s statistically accurate but rightly education doesn’t automatically equal intelligence. It’s just an interesting trend that Leavers like to jump on angrily. Probably because they’re all going senile (not serious). It’s more of a myth that younger people have been brainwashed by Blair or anyone else. Why any more so than older people being influenced by other politicians?
Remainers Better educated? That is an arrogant comment believed by egotistic twats that think they know more than the next bloke. Totally disrespectful in my eyes. How many of them knew anything about the EU before Brexit? Most knew FA and have had their opinions driven by sections of a biased press that cannot accept a result. It is okay for me living in leafy Berkshire with a nice house working in a fab job but I don't know what it is like for some poor sod living in Sunderland without a job or a house. I don't know how some farmer feels who is clogged down in EU red tape. I know from my experience of living and working in the EU that it is not for me. If people want to mock me because I don't have an O level then so be it.
