    How many states/regions are there in India?

    Given a sample size of 8858 divided by the number of states would suggest that the average sample size is tiny. A bit like when YouGov carry out UK-wide surveys which includes 57 people in Scotland.

    Toby with his 10 year old patter. No wonder it took him 6 years to do a 3 year degree

    Here is a clue

    Vegetarianism, it is often assumed is the norm in India, encouraged or imposed by ideologies of religion and caste. (BY ****S like TOBY)

    However, a nationwide survey, conducted by the Office of Registrar General & Census Commissioner, reveals otherwise.

    Key words nationwide and reveals otherwise

    So, it seems the survey was carried out across the 29 states of India. That means the average sample size per state was 305 (assuming an even spread - although there's no evidence to suggest that it is).

    That's simply not statistically reliable. When you factor in the population of India as a whole (1.3 billion) a sample size of 8,588 is meaningless.

    @Toby

    the Hindu-CNN IBN State of The Nation survey destroyed myth of Indians being majority vegetarian

    And this quote was written for you IMHO

    Historians have shown that the people of ancient India, beginning with Brahmins, ate many kinds of meat, including that of cattle.

    Therefore, to call India a vegetarian country when over two-thirds of Indians eat meat is imbecility.
