Correct. Most, if not all, are run by private operators who take most of the profits.

Soton General? A disgrace in my opinion, as Chilco says, these private operators take most of the money and it doesn’t go back to the NHS.
We’ve been paying a fortune to visit various relatives over the last couple of years and it makes my blood boil. There should be a way to get your ticket stamped if you’re genuinely visiting someone or having treatment and you shouldn’t have to pay.

Oh, and I really REALLY hope things go well with your wife and the treatment is successful. Thinking of you and praying for a full recovery mate.

I think the car parking money goes towards the upkeep of the car park and then to the trust. There was an article a while back about how much money the hospital was making from parking. Not defending it I've been stung too often but I don't think its private. There should be a £2 flat rate (maybe waived for some), irrespective of time, to cover the costs of the car park. I don't think they should come out of the normal NHS budget.

    EDIT: here's the article

Where does it say the Car park is run by the Hospital ? I maybe missing some thing .

    Chilco did say MOST .

I think the money being talked about here is the money thr car park company give to the NHS . I may be wrong though .

    Well the first line is:
'HEALTH bosses are making more than £3m per year from parking charges at Southampton hospitals - and almost a third comes from their own staff.'
    Further down:
'University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust, which runs both hospitals, made £3.5m in parking charges last year.'
Plus even further down there are calls for the hospital to reduce the rate.

I'm not disputing any of that , and if SGH is one of the ones in charge of the car parks , then it is wrong .

If however the SGH has no control over the car parking , then people criticizing them are barking up the wrong tree .

If they don't run the car parks & they made £3.5 million , how much did the car park owners make ......

Just to be clear, I wasn’t talking about Southampton hospitals, but about my own experience of other areas, particularly Bath. I guess different Trusts do different things, but I know that many services like laundry and car parking were widely farmed out to private operators back in the 1980’s. I doubt whether many Trusts have brought car parking back in-house completely, but I would guess they have a degree of control over charges.

Oh my. Yes it’s gripping. Tried it last night and watched 4 episodes.

Gripped me, although I did shut my eyes a couple of times.

Virgin drop sale of Daily Mail on their trains....I do find this another worrying sign of attack on freedom of speech and thought. I don't agree or am not interested in the views of other papers, but (to paraphrase) I would defend to the death people's right to read them.

Did remind me of a recent incident. A chap was reading the cover of the Mail in a newsagent when I wanted to buy one, so I politely excused myself as I reached for a copy. 'I wouldn't read that paper'. he said in a sneering way. 'Oh, words too long,' I replied as I took a copy.
