If he finishes outside the top four again and also doesn't win a trophy then I could see a situation where a mutual decision is made for him to go. Though I still wouldn't put money on it. There's also still plenty of time to make the top four and also three potential trophies to win. We are in the last 32 of the europa against opposition we should definitely progress past and there are only about 3 teams in the competition I'd expect us to have potential difficulty against. There's still a way to go but we are favourites, or one of the favourites for the cup. We are also in the League Cup Semi final and about to play in the FA Cup in a game you'd expect us to win. If we win any of those trophies but miss the top four I think the board will keep Wenger. Particularly if we win the FA Cup of Europa League. There's no chance of him going if we win the europa.
I'd like to see us sign a CB and CM in January but am not expecting us to actually do it. If a deal is possible for one of Wengers targets (such as Lemar) then I could see us making a signing, otherwise I think we will keep things as they are. Keeping Ozil and Sanchez (even though his form isn't very patchy this season) until the end of the season will have more of an impact on our fortunes than any new signing we make imo.
Yep this, finish outside of the top 4 and no trophy then I think he's gone. If we win the Europa league then I think that would be actually be a really decent season as it means we've qualified for the CL and added to our European trophy haul.
Any trophy will mean we continue to win regular trophies and will probably be enough to keep Wenger in his job even if we mess up the league. A europa league cup win though would be considered a great season by the board as it'd mean a trophy, CL qualification and a chance in the European super cup. I'd be happy with winning the europa or doing a cup double. I'd take that as a good season. Top four and a trophy would go down as a good season. 5th and an FA Cup Or top four and no trophy I'd take as an acceptable season given the current situation. The league cup would be a consolation prize if we don't manage the top four but not go down as a season to remember and won't do much to keep the fans happy.
im surprised all of you think Wenger will leave. I personally dont see him leaving no matter where we finish / what we win this season. He's always honored his contracts and I think the board will let him see it out regardless. After next season if we are still nowhere near winning the title I think THEN that will mean he wont be offered a new contract, and we will find a new manager at that point. (well hopefully we find one before that point). If we all of a sudden make a huge comeback and challenge for the title next season (extremely doubtful as it seems half our squad seem to be running down their contracts) I can even see the board offering him a new 2 year deal (please no...) What I REALLY hope is that next season wont turn into a will he/ wont he type of situation similar to last season. That was ridiculous and made our club look like a circus.
I cant see that happening at all. Wenger will stay until they have a permanent replacement lined-up. I think he will see out his contract even if we finish 9th-10th in the league.
I agree I think winning the Europa would be considered a success, for all that it can potentially bring. We've become more of a cup team. We have the quality to beat good opposition in a knock out tourny but don't have the consistency for the title. As White gunner mentions, we don't want a repeat of last season's will he or won't he. This is something all fans can agree on. If we intend on keeping Wenger then we have to take proactive steps on tweaking the system, like getting that transfer dude from Barca. But if we'r letting him go, then get a solid replacement in no nonsense. The management need to take decisive steps rather than pussy footing around.
IMO it would strengthen our choices at CB - he has proven PL experience and is an out and out defender who could help teach our other CB’s to tackle and defend properly. He would also add some needed height to our team. If £20m is the fee then that seems to be reasonable compared to the £75m Liverpool have shelled out for VVD. For all the above reasons we should buy him, but as Wenger is a **** at the transfer business at times, we won’t.
Anything more than 20m and I question it tbh. Hes 30, and was never really world class. I just think we could do better. Premier league experience and trophies are the positives of what he has, but not enough for me.
Think you'll get him tbh...only city could intervene imo Would be a decent squad player and as it is his last chance st a big club I think he'll jump at the chance if you go in for him
Unglamorous signing, but would be a practical one. As long as it's no more than £20m I'd be satisfied with it.
Its a bit depressing though. I mean a fully motivated Sanchez is one of the best players in Europe IMO - and he looks set to leave . And while Liverpool are signing Van Dijk - we are looking at lower level players. Why didn't we go in for him or for Koulibali? We seem to have lost all interest in Thomas Lemar - who seems more likely to end up at Chelsea or Pool. I like the fact we have appointed Minslitat and are looking to bring in young talent - but right now we have some holes to plug in the squad. I cant help but think we will let Sanchez go and no replacement will be brought in. It's like Arsene and Gazidis are happy with the 4-5th placing - decent, solid but lets not take any risks or show too much ambition now.
Would people seriously be happy with Jonny Evans? United shipped him off for a reason...if he was any good, surely he would still be there? And why go to West Brom? He's 30 years old, isn't that great (in my opinion) and would reportedly command around £25m. It would be a waste of money. I can't see where he fits into our team unless he's a back-up option and even then, £25m for a 3rd/4th choice player is quite a sizeable chunk. I'd be massively underwhelmed if these rumours are true. Not the calibre of player we should be scouting for. Having been scrolling through a few West Brom forums, they wouldn't be too disappointed to see him leave, which says it all. He's been in average form for a while now by the sound of things. There are plenty of other centre-halves we should be looking for that will make a huge difference to our back-line. Jonny Evans is not one of those players.
Looks like everything the current regime has been trying to achieve financially is failing on the pitch. Arsenal is in a position where it is near impossible to fail financially unless someone really incompetent comes in. It's a pity that we can't reflect our financial muscle on the pitch.
I know money has increased but I keep thinking 20m for a 30 year old.. Crazy money... Forget the mad cash world of football in the real world it's crazy how many seasons can he give you before he needs replacing.
As a quick fix I guess. But I would be going for the likes of Koulibaly and even shrewder targets like Lascelles from Newcastle.
If we lose Sanchez in the next couple of weeks the biggest issue will be replacing those goals he gets us. I really think Marco Reus (although just treturning from a big injury) would be the most like for like replacement. He would also be realistically affordable. We need a WF that will get us 20+ goals a Season . Reus, Gareth Bale, Greizmann, Dyabala that's the standard of player we need to be looking at here.
no offence not sure reus or bale is who you need. Both players are quality no doubt but their injury records leave a lot to be desired. On that note, they'd fit in perfectly
