Did you have to click the film icon and do it that way or did you just paste the link directly into your post? I used to do it the first way but had to stop posting videos as it stopped working on my phone.
Bloody hell Bri! You've got a good ear if you can sort all that out. Since I moved away 30 years ago, gotta be honest, it does all meld in to one for me now. My dad's family are all Fence Houses, Chester-le-Street, mining stock, and they've still got something different to my accent. But they're a dying breed unfortunately.
Yeah you’re probably right. I googled a Whitby accent and the one I heard was different to what it I was expecting. Whenever I think of North Yorkshire it’s never catterick or Richmond. It’s Scarborough, Bridlington and the areas around York. My mistake is forgetting that even in North Yorkshire there’s a range of accents. I will admit, the one sided hate it strange. Probably a good laugh down the pub for you guys.
As a non native, it sounds the same to me! I can’t tell the difference between Sunderland and Newcastle unless I’m talking about curry . I’m always telling my missus she and her family sound like a mackems (she’s from South Tyneside!)
I think eventually sharing slang on the likes of social meda will merge all ascents. It is a dying thing imo since the emergence of the web, could take centuries like to merge us fully. See I grew up the the country durham/north yorkshire boarder(Darlo), vistied family weekly in west durham(bishop area) and east druham(nana in peterlee), monthly visits to Newcastle once my Scottish dwelling family moved south and then every home game at Sunderland so had a lifetime of hearing the subtle differences across the region. You're spot on though the differences are dying out gradually.
I always used to mate, even at school id wear a Sunderland tracksuit top. I wear my Sunderland training top for the gym and i always get funny looks.
See North yorkshire to me is swaledale, Northallerton, Richmond, Catterick, Bedale, Thirsk. We have to remember Yorkshire is the biggest county in the country by quite some way. I don't know Yorkshire well. So north Yorkshire to me is anything Thirsk going north. But don't know the subtitle difference in language like I do in County Durham.
Yeah the size is crazy. Sheffield is different to Leeds which is different to york which is different to Hull. York is the southerly point of North Yorkshire (although being a unitary authority it isn’t part of it) I’m always intrigued by accents and how they come about though. The gradual change between counties is interesting and fairness play to you for picking up nuances. I struggle (except in Yorkshire)
I do think the local dialects will last longer up north. The younger generations aren't as mobile as you see down south so they're keeping the dialects and local idioms going. And long may it stay that way. Down south around London and expanding outwards, they now have this accent that's referred to as Estuary English. You hear it on Eastenders. They dont talk cockney now down there. Its estuarine. And the bad news is........ It's spreading!!
Lived in Newcastle for about 6 months. On Blakelaw which is a **** hole but thoroughly enjoyed my time there.
