Most of the reliable itk's are saying this has nothing to do with the fee and everything to do with wage demands. Chelsea can afford to pay a player 130k a week to warm their bench. We can't. Simple as.
Barkley's played no football for months and is going to take most of the rest of this season to get back into it. This season we've had that with Rose, Lamela, Llorente and Aurier, all of who have been of 'limited effect' for a long recovery period. I understand the reasoning behind not bidding and that Everton would far rather sell to Chelsea and not us [they'll see us as catchable and Abramovic and Moshiri have done business for years] but we'll struggle to find such a good player for that transfer fee again. As ever, the issue is wages. We can't pay what Chelsea do until the ground's built and earning. After another Wembley frustration, let's hope for some good news on new contracts. Does anyone know if Lamela is a free agent in the summer?
Lamela is 2020. The next significant one is Jan in 2019. I'd like him here until he can't stand up. Such a class player. Sissoko and GKN meanwhile are contracted until 2021 and 2022 respectively. Hooray.
Apparently Barkley is having a medical, absolute scenes if he walks out again. We'd be obliged to buy him for £50mill if that happened
For the price I don’t get why Spurs didn’t get involved. Even if he doesn’t do well at Chelsea, they’s be able to sell him for a profit. I might be alone in this but I’m disappointed.
I wonder if Seri was watching our CM performance last night and just thinking: please log in to view this image
Wages. Chelsea will offer him far more than we'd be prepared to. He's too big a risk to bust the bank on.
I like Barkley, but I’m torn over it. I can see how he can be beneficial, but I expect there may be another plan. (Which in true spurs fashion on deadline day we may not pull off either). Our transfer windows never result in us making much of a net spend. Therefore wouldn’t it be fair to say that we aren’t gonna spend fortunes, especially in January? Perhaps even the small fee in today’s market of £15m is money that we’re thinking could go towards someone else we feel is more suited?
Barkley has a temperament issue at times on the pitch. Can be reckless and gets himself into to many near red card situations. He is recovering from a very long term knee problem He was pretty rubbish prior to the injury He wanted way too much money All very good reasons why we can not take a risk and why Chelsea can.
As has been said on other threads here, the main issue is wages. Spurs' wages structure means he would have to settle for far less than he would get at many other clubs - and half of what he will get at Chelsea. It makes this sort of transfer impossible. A bit part player for £60k per week or for £120k per week? No brainer.
Yeah true. If we genuinely are in the market, let’s hope we can successfully find someone that’s affordable, but offers more than signings like Njie and Nkoudou.
Yet again it’s a lack of ambition imo. Spurs need a central midfielder quite urgently imo. Barkley is young, English and had huge potential. On paper he’s perfect for Poch to develop but we haven’t gone for him and I bet there is no1 else lined up.
