I'm not sure if we will...I think we will be overloaded there come next season. We can mix n match the LWB/LB position until then I reckon. Save some pennies for other positions....but let's see how it goes Roo. We will end up with **** all
Rose will be off soon, so I doubt we will. And if Sessegnon is seen as more of an attacking player, it might be something we need to address. But I agree, I don’t see us ending up with anyone to make a difference to the squad in this window. We may we’ll sign sessegnon, but he won’t be our player until the summmer IMO.
Might even be ideal to just accept Utd's (impending) offer for Rose as soon as it arrives. Seems like he's going down the Dembele route of picking up injuries. Sessegnon/ Shaw. Seri/ Barkley. I'll be a happy man if we get any of those.
More of the Same Old Same Old Reports say that we're interested in signing Jannik Vestergaard, which certainly sounds familiar considering... August 2015, he was linked with Spurs having signed for Werder Bremen that January May 2016, he was linked with Spurs before he left to join A German Team January 2018, he is linked with Spurs before no doubt heading back to Hoffenheim having left the club three years earlier...
People are losing their **** on social media over us supposedly ruling ourselves out of signing Barkley. He’s a good player, but I don’t understand the melt down. Ok, he’s worth considering because of Dembele’s situation, but I don’t see him as a priority signing whatsoever.
Totally agree. Worth considering, but the ££ quote does were OTT (young English surcharge!) and even before his injury would have been a risk. If the Chavs want him that desperately - and he is happy to sit on their bench - then that says all I need to know about him.
The fact that the club has gone quiet re Barkley says something too. Perhaps he's still not ready to play and we've told them no deal till then. Or big Sam wants him to stay and has told him to keep a low profile.
It could well be that Poch saw Barkley as a back-up plan in case Lamela couldn't manage PL football after his injury. It isn't at all uncommon for a player out for 14 months through 2 major operations is just never the sane again. But the signs so far are pretty good for Coco. I've seen a lot of posters speaking about Barkley as an heir to Dembele. I'm not sure if that came from Poch himself or a fan blog somewhere but tbh I can't see it. He has played in an advanced role his entire career and expecting a 24 year old to adapt his game to that extent is highly unlikely. With Lamela now back, games like last night re-emphasised that our one big signing this window (if we do it) has GOT to be to add some pace and trickery to the squad. Son can't do it on his own and GKN clearly isn't the solution. Some have mentioned Zaha and whilst i'm a fan of his (not of the diving though) we can forget it now as his price tag is young + long contract + star player + january = £50m minimum. I kid you not. Which brings me back to Sessegnon. If Poch does indeed see him as a more advanced winger, we should be moving heaven and earth to sign the kid. A hybrid of Rose, Lennon and Bale? Make it happen for pity's sake. The team is crying out for that something different to break down the parked buses and for £25m his price tag is the money we'd lose out on anyway if we finish 5th.
Apparently we pulled the plug on Barkley because the player thinks he is worth 120-150k per week. Which means this is a decision from the bald man, not Poch. And it's a decision that I painfully accept. We can't break our wage structure for a mid-table crock who has the potential to be a top 4 star. Not with Toby and others itching for higher pay.
And reports suggest that levy is focusing on contracts at the moment. The latest from the independent is that Kane is to be offered a 7 year deal earning £200,000 a week. Perhaps he’s hoping that players signing new deals will soften the blow when no additional reinforcements are purchased this month, as many fans would have hoped.
I suspect the truth is a combination of uncertainty on Barkleys' fitness right now (the Pochettino regime is harsh) and rumoured wage demands (he will get the claimed sums at Chelsky no problem) .
I'm hearing the same. New contracts are on the table for Kane, Toby and apparently Son too. I'd have mixed feelings if that's all we did this window tbh. That plus a buy-to-loan on Sessegnon and I'd be begrudgingly happy.
For £15mill it's hard to think there would be better value in the window. If we've got more to spend and want a better suited player in, that might sound good but we got where we are by making smarter signings rather than holding out for the perfect player and paying OTT. That said, the guy has had a long term injury and not played, I can understand why we might not be as keen to leap in without knowing how he'll be when he returns, especially since he might not be fully fit for a couple on months yet, leaving us with him only for the final run in.
There is never any value in the January transfer market. New contracts with big but-out clauses for Kane, Toby and Son would be a good start. Add loan back signing of Sessegnon would make it decent, add one or both of Doucoure/Richarleson would make it excellent. In particular, Doucoure, who has a habit of getting through parked busses. Forget Barclay, over rated under performer.
I get what you’re saying NKNG regarding £15m being good value for money and totally agree. But knowing how shrewd we are with money, I can’t help but feel that it’s not the best use of £15m, even it is is cheap. We just don’t splash the cash, and that would end up being our only signing, potentially not addressing the issues we have.
