It’s not just Europe. It’s the little ****s on the streets today who take the piss out of old or infirm folk, many of whom are infirm because of their sacrifice. The youth of today have no respect.
If I see an elderly person struggle to walk I offer my arm or help in any way I can.
If I see a poppy seller I dig deep.
It’s nowt really but it’s the right thing to do.

I’ve taken lots of time over the years to understand what sacrifices were made mate. I hope today’s young uns never have to experience what our elders did.

You know the thing that gets me. There are these old boys and girls, with their medals on in the freezing cold shaking a poppy collection box. They should be in a warm pub with a nice pint and a bite to eat whilst the likes of you and I take their place.
In fact I may look into this later in the year for the autumn collection.

It's reassuring to know that the military shaped you into the well grounded, educated and respectful chap you are.

I remember you mentioning that. Wasn’t there kits from all north east teams collected?

I remember when Sir Bob died, the Gallowgate was full of shirts from around the region (and as far up as Scotland) and they were sent to Africa too.

My old man fought in Burma, enlisted in 1942. He would never have dreamt of telling anyone and everyone about his experiences though. And as for posting tripe on an internet forum <doh>

My other Grandad only entered the European Theatre at the end of the war and helped keep the peace in Berlin. He manned a Bren gun carrier and loved making Russian Sentries duck!

My cousin was in 4th Armoured in Gulf War 1 and was at the back of the column that those yank Planes shot up in friendly fire.
