This is a better article, the echo one isn't the clearest in how it's laid out

Liverpool footballer Jon Flanagan has pleaded guilty to assaulting his girlfriend.

The 25-year-old defender appeared at Liverpool Magistrates' Court on Tuesday accused of kicking Rachael Wall.

He was charged following an incident at 03:20 GMT in Duke Street, in Liverpool city centre, on 22 December. He will be sentenced later this month.

Liverpool-born Flanagan has made more than 50 first-team appearances for the club since making his debut aged 18.

The court heard he had been seen on CCTV assaulting his partner, who he has been in a relationship with for 18 months.

Lionel Greig, mitigating, said the victim had not provided a statement and there had been no previous instances of domestic violence in their relationship.

Both parties were under the influence of alcohol at the time, he added.

Image captionThe judge told Flanagan he would face a community penalty
District Judge Wendy Lloyd said she had been given a breakdown of the CCTV, which showed Flanagan assaulting his partner on "several occasions" and kicking her at one point.

The case was adjourned to 17 January when Flanagan will be sentenced.

Flanagan was a standby for England's 2014 World Cup squad, but has only played once for Liverpool this season and spent last season on loan at Burnley after a 20-month injury lay off.

    He has one England cap.

    apparently:

    1. he lives at home with his parents (like WTF)

    2. he "beat" her which is legal definition for more than one punch.

    3. He did so twice. caught on cctv out in public

IMO that's most serious case I can recall ever related to LFC player

Off the top of my head

    molby drink driving
    Firmino drink driving
Gerrard being assaulted by a phil collins CD (or something)
Lloyd Jones arrested when on loan to swindon
Jon otsemobor shot in the arse <yikes>

    The DJ incident was different.

However, that said, if he were in Flan's shoes right now, I don't know if this would be overlooked or not.

Unjust as it may be, star players are granted more flexibility than fringe players. Not just at Liverpool but anywhere. Gerrard's career would be more likely to survive an incident like this than Flan's.

I guess it would depend on how bad the incident was.

That’s honest, but it also highlights a hypocrisy within football, we choose when to apply our moral code is the obvious answer or put more simply, it depends how good he is.....

He is getting sacked then. I can’t believe I rated him up with Stones for a slot in Brazil.

How career paths have split for those two.

Kevin Dooley(club solicitor)would have advised him to plead not guilty, got his bird to say she started it and fought it in court, Flanno gave in to easy considering his bird never wanted to press charges and refused to make a statement.
It's like Fergie using the "****ting his pants" alibi for speeding and getting found not guilty.<laugh>
