    Not saying I would want us to do that, but having a better GD compared to your nearest rivals, when you are at the wrong end of the table, could be the difference between staying up or going down, so I can see some logic in damage limitation.
    Taking your example, with a slight alteration, if you have 38 points and -25 GD, and the three teams previously beneath you end up with 38 points and -24 GD, then you start looking back at games where multiple goals conceded could have been better.
