Lawrie was a giant - ex Coldstream guardsmen, from the days when all the Queen's guards were at least 6'2". I say he was a giant, because I met him outside St Mary's a couple of seasons back, and he's shrunk a bit. Still taller than me though.
Yeah, the little ****er ran his contract down and ****ed off to Real, cost LFC millions in lost transfer fees, he went elsewhere after that and wasn't important anymore.
Real fans were fuming at that, real had been chasing Vieira all summer and even offered a world record fee i believe, then ended up panic buying Owen when Vieira changed his mind and wanted to stay.
They got Owen for a nominal fee, and he gave them the same in his time on the bench there the little ****er.
That's the nucleas of the team that went on to finish 2nd in the League in 1983/4 (our highest ever finish), and really should have won the FA Cup, but got beat by Everton in the semis. Keegan had left by then though - and Frank Worthington had joined.
frank worthington not many teams he hasnt played for. wonder who has played for most clubs? he must be up there.
A season later - Lawrie's last signing, in fact. A very good player for us, mostly under Chris Nichol
We(most Liverpool supporters)were pissed off to **** that we sold him and Sammy Lee got his place, he was ****ing dynamite, had everything, great in the tackle, shot like a rocket, great passing, and was fearless, and we ended up with Sammy who was only half the player Jimmy was.
