How many loan players can Bristol City sign in the January transfer window? All you need to know about the loan rules
How many temporary players could the Robins sign in January? Here's all you need to know

Bristol City head coach Lee Johnson has confirmed he is planning to dip into the loan market during the January transfer window.

The Robins boss wants to bolster his squad for the promotion push and a few short term arrivals could the way forward due to the lengthening injury list at BS3.

City already have Jonathan Leko and Cauley Woodrow on season long loans at the club, so how many more players can they sign?

Here's all you need to know about the loan rules.

How many loan players can a Championship side have?
Clubs are allowed to have eight players on loan, but can only field a maximum of five loan signings in any one game.

They can only sign a maximum of four players from a specific club, of which only two can be over the age of 23.

Here are the official EFL rules:
52.4.1 A maximum of 5 Players registered on a Temporary Loan Transfer can be named in the Players listed on a team sheet for any individual match played under the auspices of The League. This maximum shall reduce to 4 Players where a Club names a Player on the team sheet who is registered on an Emergency Goalkeeper Loan; and

52.4.2 No Club may sign more than 4 Players on a Temporary Loan Transfer from another Club (or club) in any Season, of which no more than 2 Players may be over the age of 23. The deadline for determining a Player’s age in this respect shall be as at the 30th June prior to the Season in which the Temporary Loan Transfer is intended to take place. Any Temporary Loan Transfer which subsequently becomes a permanent transfer (which can occur any time during the period of the Temporary Loan Transfer) shall not count against a Club’s quota of such Temporary Loan Transfers for that Season.

When can loan signings be made?
The EFL scrapped the emergency loan system last season, meaning that loan deals can only be struck during the summer or January transfer window.

This means moves will either be six-month or season-long deals.

Any recall clauses only apply to season-long loans, and can only be activated in the January window.

    What about international loan deals?
After Watford signed 10 players on loan from Udinese back in 2012 – and 14 loans in total – all EFL clubs agreed to change the regulations in international loans.

The limit on overseas temporary deals in now four.

So are there any emergency loan deals?
Clubs can apply for an emergency loan signing for goalkeepers only, and there are strict regulations in place.

Any club wishing to sign a goalkeeper on loan outside the window must provide written evidence that all the existing keepers have been certified unfit to play, that they are suspended, or called up to play for their country.

A right back if Eros is still out for a while must be high on the list. A central midfielder and a winger.

He can’t play until Jan 1st even though the last game he played was in November. So he’s been back training with us since then.

If Engvall can’t get a game now he never will. Not sure a striker is uppermost in LJs thoughts as Fammy and Milan are due back in Jan, so even a short term loan wouldn’t really have bedded in by then, so no real benefit

Your right, the point of £5.3m being raised was that is Bristol City record spend to date, would LJ be prepared to beat it, thanks for clarifying it.

It confused me when I reread it.

Not necessarily he is now six months closer to end of his contract, which might keep the price down. I guess they need to decide if they want to get some money for him or risk losing him for nothing.

If city are serious about promotion then a proven goalscorer and attack minded midfielder are top of the agenda.

If city want promotion these are a must.

I'm amazed we are scoring goals with the current set up.

Good thing the club didn't ditch Bryan like you wanted them to before the season started then! :emoticon-0110-tongu

I'm personally of the opinion that I'd rather have a team that had goals come from all over, rather than a single focal point. We've struggled a bit due to injuries, but have continued to be a threat. With Diedhiou back soon, the need for a striker might not be as pressing as some suggest. Even with some doubters, he was still able to reach 6 goals in very little time.

It's easy to say 'go spend some money to improve the team', but we don't want to disrupt what has been a successful setup to now. RR is one of those who always say 'sign someone proven', but that's the most expensive option and not always successful. We have a young team that are creating their own legacies, so that they will be considered the experienced heads in years to come.

Just one or two signings required in my mind, unless our bad luck with injuries becomes even more severe than it already is.

I agree with that. The season we went up to the Prem as Champions by 8 clear points, Heidar Helguson was our top scorer with 8.

Our goals came from all over the park. I think only Watford outscored us that season and they failed to go up.

As said Bryan, and Reid have been different gravy this season, will it last we all hope so.

I remember the year we lost out in the play offs to Hull a couple of additional quality players and we would have gone up.

And yet you're still too proud to say the actual words 'I was wrong'. All you do is cop out by saying 'how they played last season, I was right, but now I'm glad.
