Welcome to Loan Watch! A new feature which will keep you updated with how the players we have sent out on loan are getting on. At the moment, we only have two players out on loan so this issue won't be too long. Stephen Darby- Rochdale. Stephen was sent out on loan to Rochdale for the whole of this season. He has played in all four of Rochdale's league games and has also played in the Carling Cup first round against Chesterfield. Rochdale's league campaign hasn't got off to the best of starts. They have lost two games and drawn two games and are still looking for their first league win under new manager Steve Ayre. Highlights of Rochdale's last league game: http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/14609282.stm Peter Gulacsi- Hull City. Peter was sent to Hull on a season-long loan to gain some first-team football. He started the first three league games of the season but was replaced by Adriano Basso for Hull's defeat at home to Crystal Palace. Hull have had a difficult start to the Championship season with 3 losses in the league and one win. They were also beaten 2-0 by League 2 Maccelsfield in the Carling Cup. Good idea Chris, it would be nice if fan's from the team's the palyer's are on loan to could give us some feedback because they are the people who will be watching them every week.
Yeah, that's a good idea. For the next issue, i'll get some views from the Hull fans on Gulacsi but there aren't any Rochdale fans on here so i'll have to do a bit of digging to find out what they think of Darby.
It is a good idea for a thread, lets see how the players are getting on, on loan it wll determine whether or not they have a future when they return, it does however look bleak for Darby as he has Glen Johnson, Martin Kelly and John Flanagan ahead of him in the pecking order for that right back slot at Liverpool. Gulasci on the other hand if he bides his time, he could and don't quote me on this could be Reina's eventual successor in 5-6 years. He as a keeper has time on his hands.
I'm repeating myself but I saw John Coleman, manager of Accrington Stanley, on LFC TV saying he was trying to get loans from Rodolfo but was told we won't be loaning young players out anymore and will develop them ourselves. This fits in with the ethos initiated by Rafa that all levels play the same way as the seniors. Loanees have to play the way the club they go to plays, which may not suit us. Pacheco looks like an example of that, having done well at Norwich but still not fitting in when he returned.
I can see the point of that but I can't see that being the case for all players. If you could guarantee that players will stay with us then yes it clearly has some advantages but some players will improve by playing in the championship and come back to us as better players.
We can't guarantee they'll come back to us better for us. Tom Ince went on loan and has now gone. Pacheco will probably go, too. Voronin wasn't a youngster but he was one of the top scorers in the Bundeslige on loan to Hertha. Some players go on loan and come back to take first team places - Ecclestone's looked good since he came back - but I'm guessing Comolli has some data to say it doesn't actually happen as often as we'd like to think, not enough to warrant not keeping kids and teaching them the Liverpool way. If they do go out on loan it seems to me those players won't be seen as part of the future. I remember Rodolfo saying having all levels play the same way makes progress upwards easier for the youngsters. I don't know if it's the best way to do things but it works for Barca.
yes when it works, it works well although I do think it is easier to incorporate youngsters into a winning team than one that is trying to get back to winning ways.
That's true of any team at any time, though, whatever their loan policy. When your backs are to the wall you need your most experienced players. Rafa said he intended bringing more youngsters through in 2009/10 but the season started so badly that he had to rely on the regulars.
So maybe thats why I would feel more comfortable bringing through youngsters that had at least had some prem/championship experience. Not really complaining as I suppose the proof is in the pudding but it does make more sense now.
I see your point but I think we're already well on our way back to winning ways. Flano, Robinson and Sterling didn't go on loan and are all featuring in plans. Nathan Eccleston has come back but I think he was already developing well and I haven't seen enough to comment on the effect of the loan - some youngsters are going to develop to some extent as they age anyway, wherever they are. On the other hand, Martin Kelly went to Huddersfield on loan for a few months and played as a LB, which we can probably say has benefited us. Despite Rafa seeing Kelly as a replacement for Hyypia he used him as a RB when he came back and he's still there.
Youngsters would've struggled under Rafa anyway, and wouldn't have done aswell as they have done under Kenny because Rafa is a poor man-manager in comparison.
Liverpool should get a club like Man U did with Antwerp where they send all their youngsters there, and know they play and train in a similar manner to that of Liverpool. Could be abroad, or at home. I believe they're called 'feeder clubs'. I'd like Spurs to do it, but I doubt it'll happen.
remember a big fuss being made of these and thought we had one a while back (spanish club) but can't think of anyone that came through them or manu's for that matter.
Man Utd's system worked pretty well IMO: there's a list on wikipedia of alll the players, and there is a fair few now established names! Only a few still remain at Man Utd, but there are players like Shawcross who's touted as a future England centre back. Here's the full list: This list of former players acquired on-loan via Manchester United's partnership with Royal Antwerp FC.
