Sad thing is that many fine buildings that survived the war were later knocked down to make way for castle street. What a **** stain on the city that thing has been.
I went in the pump house pub, with the chimney, very disappointing inside. No character whatsoever. Not a bad place Liverpool but nowhere near as good as hull. Best place in the world...
Liverpool was “lucky” in that it had very little investment in the 70s and 80s when the trend was to knock down the old buildings and build new (see Canary Wharf and the London docks). The scouse investment came at a time when developers started to recognise the potential for the old buildings. If only we could do the same for Lord Line and other Hull sites.
A tad unfair as he also has a penchant for disparaging the youth of today, much like every older generation has for aeons. "The children now love luxury; they have bad manners, contempt for authority; they show disrespect for elders and love chatter in place of exercise. Children are now tyrants, not the servants of their households. They no longer rise when elders enter the room. They contradict their parents, chatter before company, gobble up dainties at the table, cross their legs, and tyrannize their teachers." Socrates. (not the footballer) c.470-399 BC. From Arts Council England, sorry if it's been posted before. http://www.artscouncil.org.uk/blog/hull-rip-roaring-awe-inspiring-success
Hull folk myopic? Why not just proud Castro? There is such a thing, and just now, after many years of disparity from all an sundry, Hull has every reason to be a proud place. but Hull never had the massive investment afforded other British cities to rebuild to such a scale. Even the eventual rebuilding was a cut price job, it's only Hull after all. I could cite Leeds as an example, I have been going to Leeds since the early 1950's when Hull was head and shoulders above that place, but then motorways arrived in Leeds, lots of them and what followed was investment. The M62 stops at Gilberdyke and it seems any investment with it, once Britain's 3rd largest port and we can't even get a motorway to our doorstep?
Proud in the sense that from being kicked in the guts over many years, especially ones from London who come down stay a couple of days then go home and write their version of Hull after one visit for such a short time. From being the place with worst schools (what all of them?) worst teenage pregnancies, worst wages, worst housing estates, bottom of just about every league published, and didn't the country laugh when we won, yes won the City of Culture 2017 status. Now that 2017 is nearly over and despite all the mirth and derision we have shown that Hull, given a chance, can put on a bit of a show, much like other places who constantly get accolades. We can attract World class ballet, World class performers, put on shows and concerts to gain praise from the very media who were so ready to lambast us not so long ago. We Are Hull was the message projected on to the wall of Ferens, which hosted paintings from some prestigious galleries, and now the World knows who we are and it is not what they had been led to believe. But above it all I think a bit of pride has crept back into the area, yes we still have many problems, we still have a mountain to climb to keep up the momentum, but I think that many people may have actually paid a visit and gone home pleased that they did, even if they never come back again. I praise and lambast Hull in equal doses, I'm not myopic that I can't see the downsides, but the area has suffered for too long through media bigotry, but for the first time in many a year Hull can stand proud and say, yeh we did ok.
Saw a good quip on the Ready To Go forum about Sunderland's failed COC2021 bid summat along the lines of 'Maybe it's not so bad to not be judged the place that needs it most' . Many a truth spoken in jest. On a separate note entirely, that Martin Green has done a splendid job. Maybe he could be the '3rd party' management person the Allams have said they will appoint to run the club? Gets it done, exceeds expectations, generates wave of buy-in enthusiasm- just what the club need.
Assem desperately wanted to be on the New Year Honours list, he’s going to be well pissed that Councillors are on it and he isn’t. Marvellous.
That really is the best News of the years honour list, I would love to see Assam's face when he read that.
