  1. I do two ten milers during the week and a 20 miler at the weekend. I then start to up the mileage of the weekend walk to 30-40 after 6 weeks or so. I use decent distance running shoes and although I have had blisters and lost the odd toe nail it's all been ok. At some point I will need to factor in the gym as I'm already a bit underweight so need to watch that and ensure I don't lose any muscle tissue.

Everyone is different mate. I've always been fit as a lop. But distance is more about mentality, obviously you need to be fit, but the ability to switch of is the key, or able to let your mind wander onto nonesense (easy for me that one).

But as i was hinting to Dan, fluids with loads of salts and sugars. Salt stops cramps, sugars are energy..

I can switch off no probs. Its the breathing I struggle with. Have really crap.stamina currently

I was never an exercise kind of guy but played football etc all day, literally would start at 1pm and play different games until 9pm. But as I got older stopped

with fitness comes stamina, and the breathing sorts itself out. ive done some massive distances over the years, its a mindset. A hedgehog could outsprint me. sprints **** my breathing up much more.

So just get of there and run as much (or in my case little) as I can and see how it goes?

... without wanting to sound too sanctimonious or boring ... all the stuff you do when you are younger actually helps you in later life ... according to the docs all the footie I played into my forties helped my heart ... my body had made it's own bypasses around blockages in arteries that likely stemmed from the fitness levels I built up ... or so I was told ... meant my heart had no damage to it at the time I had the quadruple bypass this summer ... still a very lucky Cnut.. but without the footie might have been dead or having the op after a heart attack which would have caused severe damage to the heart muscle <ok>

    I agree with this.

Works both ways IMO. What I mean is that people from my families background are naturally "hardier" having ran bare foot from childhood. But then when they adopt a sedentary lifestyle they suffer diabetes etc moreso

... bizarre thing is that I had no symptoms before the op ... do think I don't get as tired now as I perhaps felt before the diagnosis ... have to take 5 pills every night but that's a small price to pay ... feel very lucky ... had a time bomb ticking that might possibly have gone unnoticed until a big heart attack (given extent of blockages ... one was a centimetre long apparently) ...
