it's an example of a club who punched above their weight and are still arguably punching above it against 2 clubs who are the equivalent of United and City in terms of spending. <ok>

There only punching above there weight if the other Spanish teams (apart from Barca or Real) are spending considerably more. From what I can gather, their spend is pretty much on par with those around them. Barca and Reals spending has always been obscene and doesn't represent Spanish football.
Could Athletico maintain success if they were in the premier league, or would their spends rise considerably?

So if their doing better than those around them AND they occasionally finish above Barca and real (not even taking into account their general CL performances) is that not them punching above their weight and maybe a model for clubs who aren't the richest?

Can't answer that point about Atletico, maybe they could or couldn't but we'll not know as they aren't in the PL (or an equivalent club with the same scouts, players etc).

The point is that even the richest clubs **** things up sometimes. Atletico only need two clubs to **** up coicidentally and they’ve got a good chance. Spurs needed five clubs to do worse than they ought and apparently for Leicester not to have a miracle season simultaneously. But if we can keep in the CL next season and settle into our new stadium we will have closed the money gap a lot so should be in with more of a chance.

Not the same. Spurs have been punching above their weight season after season. Leicester once only.

Look at Chelsea in the late 60s early 70s for a similar record.

except you've never finished above all 3 of chelsea, united or city in any year since the noughties except 1, the year that the miracle happened so you'd never have won it.

You mean the past 2 seasons? You haven't been punching above your weight before that

In each of the last 8 seasons we've finished above at least one team who have more resources than us. Sounds like punching above our weight to me....

Are you sure about that? I'm not sure you have...

Also resources is overrated. Its about who has the better side. Sunderland have far more resources but if you are handing that to bill and bob to spend then that is no good.

Spurs ain't paupers by any stretch of the imagination, it's purely down to the manager and playing staff, look at the money thrown at transfers at Utd since the old Scotsman retired, it hasn't meant they've been close to winning the title, and we've been throwing money at it for 26 years.<laugh>
Unlimited money hasn't made City champions every season since the Sheikh took over but that and a combination of the money, manager and players have made them what they are this season.
Spurs matchday revenue will surpass ours when they move into the new stadium, doesn't guarantee they'll finish higher or win the Prem title.
Too many Spurs fans seem happier to cement a top 4 place than to actually win a trophy.

We have the 6th highest revenue in the PL. But that’s some £100 mill less than the club in 5th place. And less than half the top club.

So, in financial terms, anything above 6th place we have outperformed in terms of our financial weight.

But, as we're the 5th(supposedly)richest club shouldn't we be finishing in that position every season?, of course not, because if the wealth(transfer outlay)is wasted and the manager isn't up to standard we fail, as has been the case.
Club wealth(revenue)isn't a barometer of success in the league, if it was Utd wouldn't have finished the seasons since Ferguson's retirement in the final positions they have and Arsenal wouldn't be in the Thursday Night Cup this season.:emoticon-0100-smile
