I have a new Christmas tradition, known as "I forgot that I bought two cantaloupes on sale a few days previous, and I'm going to be on the move for the next few days, so I must now eat two cantaloupes in an evening". It is neither the best nor the worst of Christmas traditions. Arguably in the top five Christmas traditions, actually, even if eating a pound and a half of cantaloupe in a sitting is more than any person could conceivably desire.

Bizarre - I have a cantaloupe that needs eating too.

Then do as you must and gorge. And let us resolve to replace the red and green with edifying orange, and abandon conspicuous consumption for conspicuously consuming aging refrigerator melons. Forswear the scatter of torn wrapping paper for a jumble of gnawed-over rinds. Swap spending 150% of our monthly earnings in an afternoon for receiving 150% of our monthly allotment of vitamin C in an evening. So long Christmas; hello Cucumis.

I shall settle for just looking like a cantaloupe after Christmas. :)

Should know better than to single out one group of people, but I do sympathise with country people dealing with those who don't follow accepted rules. Eastern Europeans have been known to take swans and geese for eating....because that is acceptable in their countries. What he should have done was put up a notice laying out the rules in a general way then he could have given the non-compliers hell. People get angry and I'm guessing this man is very angry....however we shouldn't judge him unless we have walked a mile in his shoes. I don't think he was driven to putting up a foolish notice by nothing at all.

Yes, I take your point, but he already has recourse to law without singling out specific national groups in that way.

Great story about a Muslim youth group who help the lonely at Christmas. I admit that with all the awful stuff in the news it is easy to forget that the vast majority of people are decent with good intentions. There was a similar story a while ago about a Muslim group going to help people flooded out in the Somerset levels. Such acts need publicity as too easy to think only the worst.

They were Sikhs from West London on the Levels, but your point is well made Fran.
