    They do indeed.

    ‘Tin pot league’
    ‘Piss easy league’

These were two of the over used descriptors for the championship.

Some Mackems change their story as they go along... although some can see into the future too and **** gold bars when they are wrong...

Don't forget the much-used 'Apathy Shield' as well Chippy.

Now that they have wriggled out of the bottom three, they will probably say that they are are over-achieving :emoticon-0136-giggl

So, looking at the whole issue of gates dropping off....

Taking the current and last two seasons

    sunderland - Ground Capacity - 49,000

    • Prem League - 2015/16 - Ave gate 43,071 - 87.9%
    • Prem League - 2016/17 - Ave gate 41,827 - 85.4%
    • Championship - 2017/18 - Ave gate 27,671 - 56.5%

    Newcastle - Ground Capacity - 52,405

    • Prem League - 2015/16 - Ave gate 49,754 - 94.9%
    • Championship - 2016/17 - Ave gate 51,106 - 97.5%
    • Prem League - 2017/18 - Ave gate 52,011 - 99.2%

So, when relegated, Newcastle's ave gate actually increased by approx. 2.7%, whereas the mackems has currently fallen by approx. 33%

Ah, not so fast you may say - compare and contrast the varying fortunes of the two clubs in the Championship during their respective campaigns! Surely that must impact the results?

Very true, but if you took say for example, the first 3 home games of the respective championship seasons when hopes and dreams were still yet young, you find that:

    sunderland

    • Derby - 29,578
    • Leeds - 31,237
    • Sheff Utd - 29,579

    Newcastle

    • Huddersfield - 52,079
    • Reading - 48,209
    • Brighton - 49,196

In fact, stat fans - the game against Leeds quoted above, is the only time this season that sunderland and their magnificent fans have managed to get a home crowd above 30,000

Newcastle's lowest during the Championship season was 47,907 v QPR

Guess there must be a lot of rusty hinges causing gates to come crashing down in wearyside...............

This is unfair - you are not allowing for the fact that they are having to limit their capacity this season due to conversion of half of one stand to open air communal toilets. This innovative experiment (termed ****ting while watching ****) is designed to ensure fans don’t miss any of the action during the 45minutes they normally stay in the ground.

I wonder what the gates for Newcastle would have been like had they lost Rafa before the beginning of the Championship season, replaced him with Grayson and given sod all to spend leaving the club with a third rate squad. I'm not suggesting it would be as low as Sunderlands, but the feeling on Tyneside would have been far less hopeful, in fact there would have been outrage. The moment Newcastle went down they were expected to go straight back up, especially with Benitez, us on the other hand had no chance. Add the fact that SAFC had not won a home fixture for donkies yonks then I'm surprised that anybody turns up at all. Despite Ashley making bad decisions Newcastle had been run well enough to counter a relegation, within their means, we have just been haemorrhaging from bad decision after bad decision. The plight of both clubs before the start of their championship seasons are not comparable.

Look, no Newcastle fan on on here gives a hoot about you lot not being able to summon a determined push for promotion. You've just enjoyed ten years in the premier league and won the Six-in-a-Row trophy....the latter something for which we are constantly reminded. Go blame your owner for your demise, that's where the buck stops.

The fact is there was a comment about our gates dropping after a bad run (which we're currently in).

Simple case of demonstrating that this hasn't been the case for us previously, when a bad run led to relegation.
