With the away trip to Leicester coming up, it got me to thinking that sitting in the King Power/Walkers Stadium seems just like sitting in St Marys but with blue seats! Out of all of the grounds around the country, Leicester's stadium has to be the most similar to our own. I've always wondered why, but have since found out that both stadiums were designed by the same architects (obvious really), The Miller Partnership. Not only that, but there are a few other stadiums around the country designed by the same company: Pride Park (Derby County) Riverside (Middlesbrough) Stadium of Light (Sunderland) Ricoh Arena (Coventry) All of these stadiums have a similar look and very similar features to each other. So with that in mind do you think newer stadiums are as special or unique as older stadiums? I mean, the Dell was very unique and I think that made it extra special - It's hard to put a finger on it, but I just don't get that same feeling when sitting in St Marys that I did siting/standing in the terraces at the old home. How do others feel about it and feel about old stadiums v new stadiums generally? Also how do Leicester fans feel about their newer stadium compared to Filbert Street?
I just missed The Dell when I started supporting the Saints, but I know I always get a buzz when I do get to St Mary's. Even walking on the Central Bridge and just seeing the top of the stadium poke into the sky, it really does get me excited! I really can't wait to get back to a game at some point this season
Derby, Middlesborough and Coventry's grounds were all built from the same contractors that built St. Mary's
The Dell was a special place. The atmosphere was electrifying, even on a wet night in november, playing some ****ty team in the cup. Don't regret the move even a tiny bit, since tickets aren't like bloody gold dust anymore.
For some reason, being there at night with a slight chill in the air makes the atmosphere better....weird
Just mentioned this in another thread - our stadiums are the same because the architects had no imagination. Us supporters will have to make the difference then!
Leicester's ground is identical but they spent a lot more. Their concourses are plusher from what I remember but I think they couldn't afford the big screens - not sure if they have been added recently.
Of course I did love the first time I saw the tifo arranged in red and white stripes with the staidum packed to the brim and a slow rendition of 'Oh When The Saints'
We have big screens now - can't remember what yours are like as I only went around on a tour when I was visiting my family for some random reason, but ours are basically giant flatscreen tvs in the corners of the stadium.
We have one at each end behind the goals. The wierd thing is that they used to show action replays of goals but not now.
Not any more - is the Real Madrid match now. Reason why the rugby match used to be the maximum - and why the Real Madrid match now is - is because there was no segregation like there unfortunately is for our normal football matches. Bet your maximum attendance is for a friendly match for the same reason.
