Apart from Mick Channon, have there ever been any quality players to have played for both Southampton and Portsmouth? And for a bonus point, which current Premier League player signed for both Southampton and Portsmouth without making a single appearance for either team?
Mike Williamson, now with Newcastle? Think we played a couple of million for him, then agreed to pay even more if we played him?!
Dear old Ron played a few games for them but by then he had seen his best years and I have since forgiven him that momentary lapse of sound judgement. They had a full back from us a few years back that they voted their player of the season which says a lot when you think that a player we did not want was considered better than anyone in their squad by their supporters.
Controversial mabey and Poopey may have a different view but i really rated John Viafara. He was added bite to our midfield and weighed in with the odd goal. I know it didn't end well but he scrawled "that" message on his t shirt before the play off game against Derby and then bagged 2 goals. When fit and confident he was class.
Ivan Golac played a few games for us on loan in 1985, but he was a shadow of his former self by then.
A more interesting thread would have been players who played for them who we are glad never played for us. You could have filled a book with their names and at the top of the list would be that prat Claridge followed by that numpty Quinn.
Got it in one, didn't you send him on an emergancy loan to Newcastle just to avoid paying his appearance bonuses?
Ricardo Fuller, Dave Beasant, Ian Baird I've got a good question - how many players have played for both sides in a South Coast Derby?
Sounds about right. Shame really because he had a decent season in the Premiership with them last year.
