Out of interest, genuine question, in my younger days i can never ever remember a game being called off due to a frozen pitch, when did this unique phenomenon start?
brb - sorry to hear about your Alzheimers. Back in 1997 we had an FACup game v Derby abandoned at Priestfield due to the pitch being frozen. These days it doesn't have to be just the pitch that will result in a postponement. The FA will cal off a game if the surrounding area is deemed to be too dangerous for the public who might otherwise attend.
I was thinking back far earlier than 1997...im talking before SKY invented football. And another question to add, are the pitches becoming more frozen due to the continued saturation of them?
brb To answer your question 'seriously' - you must surely remember that, back in Victorian times, many matches would be called off because of water-logged pitches. And at this time of the year ( and anytime up to the end of February ), games would suffer because of snow or frozen pitches. These days, pitches have better drainage and several have under-soil heating. There definitely aren't as many games called off as there used to be..................... now if consider the effect of a bit of cold weather on our schools - goodness knows how they cope in countries with real cold !
I'd disagree, it is clear your Alzheimer's is worse than mine! Chelsea v Leeds 1970 Cup Final Replay a mud bath! Yes at Premier level with under soil heating etc i'd agree, but my point is since when did football become being played in prime conditions, half this lot today would not have survived in Victorian days.
Sorry ref, i think you should call the game off i might fall over, or even worse get wet. Ohhh ref book him, he nearly tackled me
In my effort to out- trump brb's silliness ( and to prove to grumpygit that I do have a 'lighter' side )......... I will run the risk of upsetting at least 50 % of the population ( I just hope that Minxy doesn't find out ) ------- apparently the postponement is all the fault of Carlisle's female supporters ! They have caused a giant fatberg to build up in the pipes. These have become choked with wet wipes, items of female hygiene and cotton buds. Look what's happened in London. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/education-42324932 --- still - look on the bright side - at least the northern lassies are keeping themselves clean ! LADIES - it's just a joke !
brb I agree that footballers shouldn't be sheltered from working conditions, for 90 minutes, that many people have to endure 8 or more hours every working day. Do you actually not want the pitch conditions to be improved from the 60s and 70s mudbaths? I don't actually believe that you do ! Forgive me for saying this - but you do seem to have a conception that football should be played under archaic conditions - perhaps with 'old-fashioned' rules ( such as being able to barge the goalkeeper into the net to 'score' a goal.) You are perfectly entitled to retain 'romantic' ideas about football --- and. as you know of me, I share many of these notions. But, as you know, we will always disagree about VAR ( until you see sense ! ). I believe that I have previously questioned some of your 'nostalgic' tendencies - and have posed you with a dilemma - by suggesting that if you were sincere about old- fashioned values, you ( or rather mrs brb ), should be taking your washing to the River Medway every Monday morning ! I am fairly sure that you have a washing machine - and that you have a 'nice' car - not a horse and cart, and I know that you've got the internet - instead of carrier pigeons etc etc. Without meaning any personal offence, I believe that you are being selective in your fantasy that football should be played using jumpers for goalposts etc. You may have your fantasy - but, as I don't trust the referees and linemen to get much right, I can't wait for VAR. ................... Merry Christmas - please enjoy your orange and hoop & stick !
Arcaic or not, i stand by my views. Who is to suggest modern day conditions is better than decades old conditions and to who's benefit, the middle classes? Football rules survived over 100 years without goal line technology, and in my view should continue to do so. Have you ever seen a bull ring in Spain or the twice yearly horse racing in Italy...i could go on, all built on tradition, it never was broke and the only reason they are trying to fix something is because of financial implications. A cheating ref is a cheating ref, i don't need a replay to tell me that. Pompousness has no place in the game, because it only suits the cheating bastards of FIFA or the FA, corruption mate, and what are you and all the other supporters doing about that, i will tell you, absolutely nothing!
Keep your clothes on - you can give them (and yourself), your annual bath ----- well, it is Christmas
Believe one of the reasons it was called off so early was to prevent those hardy few making the 330 mile trip up to Carlisle for them only to find out when they were up north. Next Tuesday makes for grim reading as it means they will have about 7 games in 2 weeks.
Probably could have played it on Wednesday if they really wanted to. Would have saved another 670 mile round trip. Fair enough calling it off in the morning, but I presume the team were already there. Anyone know? The way the weather and forecast is at the moment the pitch might be waterlogged by next Tuesday
