Which isn't what I was saying. But thanks anyway.

 

Some Polish lads I work with occasionally all change to winter tyres around October, they say it’s the law in Poland and is a good habit to keep here, I suppose if you have room to store them there’s no harm in having two sets of tyres on the go.

I'd say it's more to do with that part of the syllabus being delayed until the next lesson (which won't happen if only one student has gone on holiday). I'm with PLT on this one (and not the price-gouging travel companies). Some of the stories about it are hilarious. My particular favourite was a kid who was going to miss out on learning about Chinese New Year (his parents were taking him to China to experience it first hand!)

I have a spare tyre that keeps me warm if it’s cold.

 

I opened the front door in my pyjamas once.

I bet no-one else on here has a front door in their pyjamas.

 

As we don’t live in Bavaria, I can’t say it’s relevant. They probably do close off public transport. If the weather was bad anywhere they’d close the school, they do it in Canada and the US all the time.
Parents aren’t going to risk walking their kids on sheet ice or risk driving in bad conditions if they don’t have to and we rightly don’t expect it. Truth be told, a lot of staff don’t live near the schools, so if it looks like it will be bad, they might shut it anyway for that reason.

 

Isn't wordplay with the English language marvelous at times?

 

Obviously don't have the "Blitz spirit" either.

Or just have a full set of wheels with winter tyres on, straight swap. Makes it easier for British drivers that like to keep control of their vehicles in the wet, muddy, icy and even snowy conditions we experience in Autumn and Winter

 

Back in the late sixties I had a Ford Anglia with wide wheels on all round, looked great and handled a dream on corners. My Dad you to say what did you buy those for waste of money. One morning there was a really heavy snow fall over night, and my Dad who worked as a manager for the cleansing dept, had to go out early to set up gritters and casual works to clear the snow.

He tried to go in his car and couldn't even get it out of the drive, and woke me up as my car was on the road outside and could I take him to work. We went with hardly a problem, were other with normal sized tyres were struggling and he never complained about them being a waste of money again.

 

I drive a Land Rover Disco with studded off road winter tires and its fitted with both a snorkel and a winch. It'll take some pretty ****ty weather to stop me getting to work.

My last car here was a right hand drive CLS and I put on all year tires and to be honest it performed pretty well in the sort of snow you get in the city.

You can also but Autosocks which fit over your wheels and give exceptional grip in the snow. Unlike chains they're cheap, fold up in a small bag in the boot and won't damage the car if they came loose.

If I lived in England and had a couple of snow days a year I sling a pair in the boot for winter.

My Son has a Land Rover Defender mk3 with a snorkel, winch and Bighorn tyres.

The chances of him driving it in the snow where we live are nil! I don’t think he will drive it off road either.

 

Once went to help a mate with a TD5 defender that had been in deep water, all well and good having snorkels, wading plugs and the like but Land Rover putting the engine management electric box under the seat was not one of their best ideas.

 

I've "swam" defenders dozens of times across rivers and the like although they were the Army versions - nothing like opening the doors as you caome out to let all the water out.

The snorkel on my current wagon is just for posing but what I really miss are the 50mm cannon and co-axially mounted GPMGs which would be brilliant for dealing with the dopey drivers around the city
