So Bristol Sport's worst kept secret is out. A new training ground at Ashton Vale, and a new arena next to Ashton Gate, with a (rumoured) 1,000 capacity car park. SL is really going to leave a legacy isn't he?
I'll wait for the Dog Walkers to claim it as their own land and prevent it being redeveloped before I get too excited.
If the Community access and use criteria are hard and well defined it will receive wide local backing this proposed development will go ahead.
3000 seater will do just fine, although I think 5000 would be better. We’ll then get bigger acts down this part of the country. Peter Kay said he wanted to tour in Bristol over Cardiff but there is nowhere for us to host him. I have to go to ****ing London next year to see him. We need an arena desperately! I hope SL builds this one and then the council finally build a proper one. Absolutely piss take it’s taking so long.
Welcome to Bristol Where we'll constantly dig up the roads all over the city at the busiest times of the year to make motorists life an absolute misery, and give an awful impression to tourists. And at the same time we'll provide some of the worst, expensive, and most unreliable public transport imaginable. And then we'll prevent big acts from coming here as well by having tiny venues like the Colston Hall and the O2 Academy. In retrospect, we as a local body will also ensure anything approaching modernity and progress will be mired in red tape for years or we'll give in to minority groups just to ensure it never actually happens. We'll also close the biggest runway in the south west and make people fly from a rural airport on tiny planes, effectively forcing people to make stupidly convoluted journeys to their chosen destinations, or fly from other locations that welcome visitors like Birmingham and London. I despair sometimes. Can you tell ?
I think it was one of the biggest and longest in the country. And right next to the M4 and M5 motorways and a rail link!!!
If you're on about gigs I completely disagree mate. 3,000 is nowhere near enough. Should be looking more at 8-10k.
A scandalous decision and one made with no forethought or understanding of the situation whatsoever. Sod the local residents who whined 'not on my doorstep', they could have moved if the didn't like it. Plus Filton Airport was there many years before Bradley Stoke was ever some nightmare in a Town Planners vision. We could have had an Airport to rival most others in the UK, especially with the road and rail links. But as usual the wrong decision was made, and it wasn't to the benefit of Bristol as a whole.
Yeah I agree which is why I said 5k would be better. Can’t see SL splashing out on a 10k seater and why should he, if he does the council will sit back and let that be the city’s arena, 3k will do, 5k would be better. Hopefully they take fan feedback before going ahead with it.
Even 5k is a bit short I reckon though, and that's besides the point. This isn't for music, it's for Bristol Sport - the Bristol Arena should go ahead regardless (even though we all know it won't).
Two Mayors have now been elected on 'Arena' promises, we have spent millions in studies and bullshit and what have we got, a bridge that may now never even be used because they are thinking of moving the site? its an absolute shambles and is typical of the mentality of Bristol Council throughout my lifetime, their incompetence is staggering. I cant understand why they are moving it anyway, Temple meads is a central transport hub, nearly all areas of Bristol run a bus there there is a mainline train station that could supply, Clifton, Bedminster, Keynsham, Bishopston, Parkway. if you put things like this in City centres it always enhances them, look at Cardiff, Arenas surrounded by Restaurants and bars etc, the Filton site has none of this as close to it.
Build trams over the cycle track, which has ready made routes to the suburbs of the city already, green, cheap and fast transport. Get the Arena built. Heck, allow Rovers to build their ground on part of Filton Airport (if the money ever arises). Instantly, 3 massive issues with Bristol are helped. It's just too obvious.
Wasn't the runway increased to accommodate the Brabazon? My father supposedly took me to watch the flight from Filton and apparently it only just got off the ground, which sounds eerily correct for Bristol.

5,000 capacity def too small. Even motorpoint takes 7,500 which is probably one of the smallest. Most of the popular arenas (that attract big acts/events) take 15,000-20,000+
Strange to see a Brabazon landing gear on a Dan-Air plane and if you ever travel the roads around Lasham, Hants you will be able to find a lot more plane spares that fell off the aforementioned airline after they had been serviced. I also used to see the Concorde flying in to Boscome Down on many occasions whilst playing, or refereeing games, in the Andover District League. Nothing to do with the size of the proposed stadium but a nice memory. Thanks for the video Wiz.
