Yes the ball slipped - it’s called a foul throw when that happens. Especially when your hands are above your head ready to take the throw. So as original post said rule was overlooked to give Chelsea ball back.
Which I thought was strange - it was almost a goodwill gesture. Once his two hands were above his head and the ball slipped it was a foul throw end of.
It is a shame Chelsea didn’t run up pitch and score from it as all hell would have broken loose - didn’t matter to me just odd decision

What is it about footballers and their ability to shoot them selves in the foot? Benteke.<laugh>

A decision is made about the penalty taker. It is X. Why is it that when it is highly pressurised in injury time and a goal is worth definitely 2 points (and potentially £100m at the end of the season) that suddenly benteke (and other similar fools) feel the urge to grab the glory?

It means 3 things:1) no confidence in the previously chosen player 2) he thinks he is much better in taking pens especially under pressure. 3) he feels so confident to brave the flak if that very unlikely miss happens.

And when the penalty is missed through a poorly taken shot the manager and the whole team and fans rightly come down on him like a ton of bricks. Poor decision from a selfish player, showing little team discipline. I would fine him if I were his manager.

Well yeah, it's like Unsworth being handed the England job based on caretaker duties.

    i agree.

whoever was player X they were weak. benteke IMO broke managers directions and in effect rules by grabbing it.

By all means beleive 100% you will score great but a decision was made... presumably on training gorund evidence not a name out of a hat

IMO he should be dropped next game. simple as. Put him in his place cos he's not delivering anyway is he?

    100% right, orders is orders.
he should have thrown the designated taker with him though, weak willed twat.

We had it last year in our opening EL game at home to Sparta Prague... Austin wrestled the ball of Tadic after about 3/4 minutes of arguing. It went in in the end but was ****ing infuriating to watch from the stands.

Only thing I'd say is Benteke puts the designated taker in a bit of a no win situation. If he wins stands his ground and then misses he looks a twat. He looked a twat for giving up so easily,

Person I'd criticise (other than Benteke lol) is Sakho. He's the captain and so the managers voice on the pitch. He should have strode up to benteke and told him to **** away off. Take the pressure off Miljovetic as well.

Tits up all around. They should all have just piled on Benty in the changing room and knocked his **** in lol.

Players should be intelligent enough to work out when the chosen taker can be varied. For example, if the chosen taker has already missed 2, I would want a change and even then I'd like the captain or manager to be happy. Or if the team is winning 4-0 and Benteke is on a hat trick, I would happy for him to ask the chosen penalty taker for the chance to complete that. A miss is not going to be that great a deal unless we are talking about 5-0 to go through or to stay up.

But to grab the ball for the only reason to end a goal drought when surely 2 points was so damn crucial, was just selfishness. And to make matters worse, his shot showed he was devoid of confidence. It was not that he was confident to score the goal, it was more that scoring the pen was going to restore his confidence. Never a good reason to grab the ball.

    I agree.
Players should always do what the boss has told them to - even if the boss is Roy Hodgson. It's respect for the manager's position, if not for the man.
