I saw a van round back of the Hilton this morning delivering kellogs frosties.

Thought they'd have had marks and spencers or waitrose cereals

Well,Marks and Spencer' and Waitrose don't manufacture cereals. They get someone else to do so and then market it in their own packaging at a higher price. Most often a much higher price. So buying direct from the market leader, which more than likely manufacturers the cereals for those two companies anyway, directly and at a lower price seems much more sensible.

I once opened a can of Heinz Baked Beans to discover the can was filled with Garden Peas - but Heinz didn't can and sell Garden Peas under their brand (dunno if they now do so).

So why ask the question in the first place as it was stupid one which appeared to be based on a lack of knowledge and sensible business practice?

Have to take issue with you there Castro. In my experience own brand is usually cheaper. I've never seen own brand Frosties but see these
    . Look at the price/100g.

When I was at Uni, circa 1991 we had a visiting lecturer from industry every week. One week the guy was from Heinz and explained to us that they saw all of the contents as very much of secondary importance because they essentially saw themselves as a packaging company and that's where all of the development budget went. Which surprised us slightly naive students no end.

Although talking of naive, it's probably even more topical now, but he showed us prototypes of two new products that they were really excited about. Both were essentially the same concept - one was a complete peeled orange inside a Kinder egg style 2 piece plastic pretend orange case. The other was a peeled hard-boiled egg inside a similar pretend plastic egg case. He was genuinely excited and thought they'd be a real winner. I think the entire class was united in being utterly appalled at how woefully out of touch they were in replacing a natural biodegradable case that's worked pretty well for centuries with a one use plastic case for the sake of a bit of convenience. I've never seen them since though...
