Shocked that you fawn over that 18th Century throwback. The funny thing is, that pompous old no mark Tories like you would be the sort of people he'd undoubtedly look down his nose at. He'd probably pass you his coat

We'd have kids back up chimneys in no time under that bobble head <laugh>

I don't think you have thought this through. Staying in the customs union would mean accepting any changes that the EU wished to make to their union without the UK having any say. You would be on the outside in many respects, yet bound by the rules.

You mean this Davidson? Shouty or Rooth the Mooth as she is known in these parts - because she really doesn't know what she wants or what she's doing.

No chance of another Scottish referendum, the Scots have a reputation for being financially careful, they know Scotland would be bankrupt without the Whitehall money tree.

The French leader Macron and now Martin Schulz are openly putting their names to the long held plan to turn the EU into a federal superstate. Thankfully the UK saw this coming early and correctly decided to leave before the EU slid further into a rigid United States of Europe.

Martin Schulz calls for ‘United States of Europe’

I wonder if the population of each member state will be asked if they agree?

It is our job to make sure that we are asked - what is needed is for European citizens to claim back 'their' union, as opposed to running away like the UK. A United States of Europe cannot be a carbon copy of the USA. where leaving the Union is not possible. A European Constitutional Treaty would need the active involvement of all Europeans to be created - establishing a separation of powers between those held at the national level and those held at the EU. level. Similar to the separation of powers already in force in Germany. Exactly which powers would be held at which level is not known - Schulz is just one of 400 million Europeans and his vision of a 'United States' will be different from Macron's - and different again from thousands of others. It is important that all Europeans are engaged in this dialogue. We cannot go on with a situation in which some EU. nations can act as Tax havens against the rest. Nor, as Schulz says, can we cope with a further 4 years of Schäuble and Merkel's austerity politics.

The problem is the EU have a solid history of not listening to the people. How many times have they ordered a re-vote because they did not like what the people wanted?

I would have thought it was obvious that Macron and Schulz have a lot more say in forming policy than the average inhabitant, especially when you know you are likely to be ignored.

It could be a very late night for some civil servants as they try to find some form of consensus between the government and the DUP. We had similar difficulties when May said that she had an agreement with them after the GE, only to find she had jumped the gun, and it took another two weeks to buy their votes. Just where have things got to on the three items that had to be solved before talks could move forward? Looks as if the financial problem has been agreed to, and Hammond has confirmed that without meeting our obligations no one would trade with us. Citizens rights also seem to be there, with all that the EU Parliament was asking for having been conceded. ECJ will still look after their rights for five to fifteen years, (period to be agreed). Families will not be split up, and any money that someone earns in the UK, it will be up to them what they do with it. So we are now down to just the one item. Despite Brexiteers always saying this was not a problem, and it being pointed out that in some ways it could be the biggest one, it has now got to the point where it could bring down the government. Push the DUP beyond what they will accept and May doesn't have a slender majority in Westminster. Give them too much and the right wing nutters will try to dispose of May. There is talk doing the rounds tonight of her going before Christmas, being replaced by Davis for a limited period. After his shocking and embarrassing performance yesterday why would the country accept that? It is not surprising if you look around the pro and anti EU newspapers this evening, you find that the Brexiteers are now in the minority, with many of the regulars not to be seen at all. Slowly common sense is getting through.
