    HULL, CITY OF CULTURE 2017.

Even though our culture status remains, as we now know, Coventry take over in 2021, I would like to add my twopenethworth of thoughts to the past year. Having grown up in the 50’s and 60’s, which, to me, was a golden era in many respects, I grew accustomed to Hull being, derided, ignored, pitied, insulted, you name it, every insult in the book thrown at us. It was a kind of national past time for the papers of the day, in short, we were made a laughing stock, truly a village at the end of the line. Grand schemes for the North never included Hull, the M62 fell short by about 25 miles, rail improvements seemed to be taking place everywhere else, despite the award winning Hull Trains, then the smell. Yes, when the wind was in a certain direction there was a certain aroma, only slightly less pleasant than a certain Hai Karate product.

Yorkshire Water would sort it, so they said, go past the gleaming new sports shop on Ferensway and you get a whiff of nostalgia, no fish docks to blame now. In fact, there are a lot of places not there to blame now, Imperial Typewriters, Priestmans, Hawker Sidley, Brough Aerospace or whatever it was called, (and I know technically it is not Hull, but thousands of Hull people worked there), and others have all long gone. There have been additions of course, thank goodness, but nothing replaced the blight and dereliction caused by the collapse of the fishing industry. People used to say to me that it was only a few fishermen that lost their job, what a travesty of justice that statement is. We had craft industries of an excellent calibre all supporting the ships, and their crews, for their journeys to such perilous waters. Carpenters, electricians, plumbers, draftsmen, radar experts, shipbuilding, to name a few, then these crafts were taught at Hull College, the 8th floor was mainly taken up with shipping communications.

For a long time all we were left with were empty docks and a decaying waterside, we still have in a few areas, and the insults still came at us. ‘Worst place to live, scum of the earth, worst schools, more teenage pregnancies, poor prospects’ you get the gist. Some things have improved but still we are blighted from those in London dragging their heels to let any money come to alleviate the appalling road situation that is Castle St. The road network in general is a nightmare, it only takes an accident on the western approaches to the city to gridlock Hull and beyond for hours on end. Northern Powerhouse? Didn’t include Hull did it? Oh, and on the same day a so called massive rail electrification for the North was cancelled a reciprocal massive investment for transport infrastructure was announced for London, well, well. So, you can imagine the scepticism I encountered at the announcement at our successful application to be come City Of Culture 2017, yer right.

The usual stuff happened, plans were draw up this would happen that would happen, a kind of déjà vu encroached me, then it started. Ok I thought, we’ll give it a go, well it’s here now and I am not likely to see anything like this in Hull again, certainly not in my lifetime. So, on a cold and frosty night on January 1st, well I will quote from my diary:

‘But the big news of course is Hull being the City Of Culture 2017 and the whole thing started off today, a light show plus a firework display, with the media out in force covering the event. It’s Hull’s big chance on a World stage, a chance we desperately need to take and make work for the future of the city. At the moment the jury is out, the verdict will be announced a year hence’.

I didn’t go that first day, it was the 4th January before I got to see the light show for myself but the cranking of the media cogwheels had started to grind. ‘Fantastic, Out of this world, brilliant’ these words filtered back to me from tv and from people who had been there, mmm I thought sounds promising. So the 4th January, me, along with my wife, and goodness knows how many others, were stood in Queen Victoria Square, the atmosphere was electric. At this point something clicked in me, there was a buzz the I hadn’t experienced since the heydays of the 1970’s when Hull, and surrounding areas were a nightclub paradise, then it began. On this day I had other considerations on my mind as we stepped into Victoria Square, but again my diary takes up the story:

‘We were outside of the City Hall for the City Of Culture video show and I have to say that it blew my mind, it was awesome, then it was down to The Deep for another video show. We didn’t get to see it all as it had started but I will have to come again.’

In fact, I remember being rather emotional at the images being shown around Victoria Square, the bombings, the trawlers, Hull celebrities past and present, I was indeed blown away. And from then on it got better and better and, yes, better still, not all of it of course, some of the stuff was a disappointment to me, especially some sound effects in Zebedee’s yard, not impressed. But over the year I have taken in as much as I could, Hull Truck, Hull University, Ferens Art Gallery, Fruit, and goodness knows what else. I even attended the Gay Pride procession, you can imagine the comments I got from family and friends when they found out about that, funny looks don’t come into it. But it was the attitude in the City, bolstered, by, for once, by a very positive media, Hull folk were proud once again, prouder than before. Week after week something was going on, and it was reported by the media, the momentum was unstoppable, but Ull being Ull some of the comments in the Hull Daily Mail were anything but complementary. I don’t know if it’s a Hull thing, but there is a certain strain within the population who have nothing, and I mean nothing, but bad to say about their city, If you want a downside of the city folk then look in the Hull Daily Mail comments, why are they still living here then, I ask myself. And so it is nearly year end, and what a year it has been, the video OLM has just shown is breath taking, but there have been others that I have seen on the internet. I cannot pick out any particular instance that I would put at the top of my list of awesome experiences from this past year, but there have been many that I can recollect.

Sketches and drawings by Leonardo da Vinci, a painting by Rembrandt, part of the fantastic poppy display from The Tower Of London, historical documents from Hull’s part in the English Civil War, Fruit, and the surrounding area blossomed, and how can you forget the Blade, which I think should have stayed where it was, already I have forgotten more than I can remember. But that first night and those images will stay with me, and I can only hope that this momentum carries on right until we relinquish that, now coveted title, C of C. For that is what this title has done for Hull, people now hold Hull up as an example for what can be achieved, from the crappiest, ****tyest, down and out, pit of the earth, village at the end of the line, people have come, in their thousands, have been amazed at what they have seen and gone away in awe of the place. I am well into the later years of my life now, but to see this whole kaleidoscope of events taking place in the city of my birth was an unforgettable experience, even if I cannot remember it all now, the pieces I can remember were well worth remembering.

A big thank you to all those who were instrumental in putting together all this extravaganza, and to think at the start of it all I was of the opinion that, yes here we go again, all talk. But how I was proved wrong as along with the talk was the action to back it all up, and its fingers crossed, from now on, that until 2021 this can still attract the attention of the world and not fizzle out until the very end of 2020. Well done from this early sceptic.

I am of a similar age group to you, and concur with your well written summary of the last year. As you say great credit to all concerned, and even the Hull City Council, which I never thought I would ever say these words, but there I said it.
