Blackburn was our first ever away game in the PL on a August Saturday afternoon. Barnsley was also a Saturday afternoon in May when we all thought we would be automatically promoted to the PL that afternoon. Wednesday was a Tuesday night, following two decades of lower league football and the support that night was even better then the previous two mid week trips into South Yorkshire when our support turned out. 1970/71 for the Battle of Bramall Lane and Doncaster away in the FL Cup about 1975. There is no comparison at all with Blackburn or Barnsley away, Sheffield Wednesday was our coming of age at the time.
They were just examples of two other big attendances, as it had been suggested that Wednesday was a one off big attendance.
Yeh remember that night at Bramall Lane. One of my first night away games with my dad sadly long gone.City packed into corner of Shoreham street Kop and lower tier at the other end. Skin heads all over the place as we battled out a 2-1 win. Must have taken well over 6-7 K that night easily but things always looked bigger when you were a nipper.
For the fans, it was probably our biggest league game for 20 years, the years of being dicked by the likes of Mansfied, Rochdale and Scunny etc were exorcised that night - it's one of those rare games that you're glad to say ''I was there'' ....... it was coming up to Christmas too, no excuses required that night!
Don't know anyone who didn't attend that night. We finally got in when it was 2-1 to City due to traffic. Fans still coming in a half time and bottles of p!ss flying around in corner to our lot all night.
A Wednesdayite I worked with told me next day it was the first time he'd seen the away end so full for years, the 'wing' section was hardly ever used - it gave me a real buzz listening to our support being bigged up by an opposing fan.
Good wannit. Proper night game that under the lights. Barmbys volley, massive crowd baying for more ,think every nutter in town attended. When it's right at City the lid comes off big time.always said that and that night proved it support wise.
Did you make the replay at Boro in the cup a few years ago? Made some f'kin noise that night. Always a good date in the diary Boro, usually for reasons other than football..so I'm told.
Better memory than me. And just think two or three hundred of them would have been tiger travel types...
I paid for my lad and daughter to attend the 1st prem away game. I'e just asked him and he said it was 4,700 at Blackburn.
Had the same thing at Nottingham a few mobths later with a couple of Wednesday fans. He said that they never usually allowed anybody in the quadrant area.
Only reason I remember Chazz is coz it was my only weekend off in the month of December, we used it to take the pressies down to the in-laws, have two nights on the lash and take in the game. We set off the day after the Wednesday game.
SWFC away was our first game against a massive team in about 15 years. How many would have gone if it had been a Saturday game or near the end of our promotion-winning season that year ? Happy memories of Ouse Bridge M62 midnight gridlock on the way back, getting out the parked car to go and have a chat with other fans. There was only one massive team that night.
