Mata was our reserve choice behind Downing. Once the latter was sealed, the interest in the former ended. People need to realise that there was never an official approach and therefore no rejection. I'm not saying he would have come, but the fact is that no bid was made.
Its funny how on Saturday morning Arsenal were favourites to get hold of him if they got past Udinese. Arsenal then played us and were rubbish. Sunday night Chelsea have agreed a price. Seems to me that Arsenal dont have the draw they think they do.
Maybe he never actually wanted to leave but Valencia's constant 'We could sell him at the right price' made him feel like they wanted the money more than him. Arsenal should have signed him, I would have been happy if they did. The poor guy is kind of forced to move to Chelsea now. I'm sure the £90,000 wages will somewhat heal the wounds.
Things is, going to Chelsea and having a bad start may be the end of a career for a 3 4 5 year spell, when you go on the bench there you may never come off it as RA will just replace you in Jan or the summer if you don't cut it, he doesn't hang around, all that matas is that you play week in week out. I wasn't sure about Downing before, but i'm happy now. Not too fussed about Mata, although I think he will do well at Chelsea.

I think one of the other posters may be right, but don't quote me on it as I'm just a newbie, but maybe just maybe Kenny didn't want him because he's not an out and out winger and chose Downing because he is an out and out winger.
