Sort of, it get a second finish after being shipped to France for the Cognac casks. The company is French but it is made in Barbados.

Yeah that's what I had read. He used to sell the cognac casks to rum companies and then decided to create Plantation and finish the rum in France, the change from bourbon cask to cognac and the change in temperature is what gets the great finish. I've had a bottle of Ron Zacapa before which was my first high end rum and it was well worth it but ratings wise this bottle of Plantation is rated as much better so I'm looking forward to trying it.
I had a friend who sadly died some time back, I used to visit him in Barbados where his family used to distill rum (Defrietas). It was those journeys that got me into Barbadian rum. Enjoy!

I will, I got into rum after trying a Havana 7 and went from there, had some birthday money burning a hole in my pocket and went for the Ron Zacapa and was blown away at how nice it was, this will be my 2nd high end bottle. Don't think I'll ever go over this price though.
I think it's normally £75-£85 which would have been too much imo. I think there comes a point where the difference in quality is lost on the normal person so paying silly amounts is foolish. I can appreciate the difference at this level and some might think I'm nuts buying a £60 bottle of booze but I find it really interesting and will keep it a long time other than getting smashed on it, I've got the Tin Cup for that.
I found the same with fine wines, it got to a point where the nuances were wasted on my palate. Used to love Pouilly Fume at around £15-20 a chuck but mainly settled for a mid range Sauvignon Blanc.
I agree, I've had some expensive wines and thought them no better than what I was getting in supermarkets. There's a huge gap with rum though, Havana 7 is great at about £20 (as a mixer) but then it's not worth paying £30 or £40 for a bottle it's not good enough for the price and then you hit the £50 plus mark and there's a huge difference. This bottle I'm buying will not see a mixer.
