And who'd have thought he'd play well with his old buddy in front of him! :)

Genuinely have no idea why Hojbjerg was exiled in the first place. Isn't the finished product, but he has qualities that none of our other midfielders can boast. Like LTL, I'd strongly consider him over Davis.

Long way to go before we can declare the ship righted, but this is a step in that direction.

Hmm...two nice goals from crosses that found the centre of his head pretty much unmarked. This is being *hyper* critical, but I didn’t think he offered much other than that (and it’s a bit of a daft criticism, granted, as that’s his job). I still think Gabbi is markedly the superior player, would also have scored those two goals, and who just missed out on a game where, with the way he plays, and the way we played today, he’d probably have got four.

So that’s a roundabout way of me saying, if we’re going to play like that, I’d play Gabbi over Charlie all day long. Still.

Just watched the 90 mins (I recorded Sky as too scared for live). One commentator said 4-1 didn't flatter us....good to hear. We know we have decent players...I'd struggle to name one that I would call actually poor, though I'd like to see a few worldy games from Forster....though now I think about I prefer that our keeper is never asked to do anything. We just needed them to all put a shift in in the same game.

They kept showing Unsworth and not Pellegrino. You could say because he is under pressure, but I have the suspicion that they would still have shown him if Everton was winning....since they are obviously more important than us.

Write off? What? Can I have my £30 back then? I bought that before today fully expecting us to give the champions elect a spanking.

Excellent from everyone today - really pleased for Austin (not such a fatty now is he ?), and PEH. My only critisism if I was being picky was that we didn`t work the keeper enough. Looking at Everton, I was struggling to see where they spent all that money in the summer.

He makes good runs and is generally clever about finding space. Good finisher, too. But then, I would say the same about Gabbiadini. The main difference today was Everton’s dire defense. How can Everton have both Schneiderlin and Gueye and still be so lackadaisical?

I just think who starts will depend on who we play. When we can get the fullbacks up and feed in crosses from the wing, then Austin. If we are playing more on the ground through the middle, Gabbiadini. On the counter, Gabbiadini. With a lead and needing some holding ability up front, Austin.

We did look markedly better today, and if that is due to style of play than Austin obviously needs to start. But I feel it was more Everton sucking, plus hopefully the players gelling.

I think you will find it was Boufal.

Vin and I both agreed that if we play like that, we have an incredibly outside chance of clinging on desperately, with a large dollup of luck, to a draw!

So no, definitely not a wasted trip!

    On BBC:

Goal! Southampton 1, Everton 0. Dusan Tadic (Southampton) left footed shot from the centre of the box to the centre of the goal. Assisted by Ryan Bertrand with a through ball.

Solent said it was Boufal - I stand corrected if I am wrong. It was the other end of the itch to where I sit. I thought it went from Bertrand , to Boufal and to Tadic.

I've watched PEH in a few U23 games and thought he was crap. Combine that with some very mediocre performances last season, I groaned when I saw him on the team sheet. But yes, he was MOTM for me. Everyone pretty much showed character and good attitude today. I would be very disappointed if the starting 11 don't retain their places for Wednesday.

Michael Keane has been utterly shocking, and Davy Klaassen appears to have vanished from this plane of existence. Both players I'd have taken in the summer, but that's 50m that has been not only wasted but counterproductive to date.

Boufal through ball to Bertrand. Betrand forward to Tadic. If memory serves.

Poor mistaken Boufal. When he scored that wonder goal the guy called him Lemina five times & didn't bother correcting. :(
