Dyson bought a US battery company and are pouring a lot of money into research into battery power. I'd be surprised if they don't crack it.

I agree with all you say there about Lithium batteries. And yeah, there are other storage technologies coming along. As to the lenr/cold-fusion stuff, it's already here. Last year a 1 Megawatt continuous yielding test power station [in a half size shipping container no less] finished testing for 1 year by supplying bonus electricity to a research building in the USA. The independant report came out on it saying it was absolutely genuine. I believe it was sat in the car park. The backers, who promised a second payment of US$80M odd withdrew their promise after the test ended. When the report came out they were taken to court and lost their money. In the last few days of this month a new design will be demonstrated online that produces an even larger sustained yield for the size. Whether that manages to gain mainstream attention is another matter. There is a tremendous ongoing resistance from some sections in the science world, especially those backed by oil companies, and direct from the oil based business community, who are seeking every low level way of trying to ignore it or dishonor it. Yet it continues to move forward under relatively tiny research budgets.
Now if you were talking about Hot Fusion your stark bollock naked wager would get no takers. That will always be 50 years away, no matter how much money they chuck at it. And they've chucked billions. Typically, this is the one area that us British have not done things on a shoestring. We've chucked billions too. And Hot Fusion has yet to yield a tiny fraction of the energy they inputed at the first major test some 50 years ago. :)

To be honest FLT, there's nothing to be cracked really. State of the art battery technology is pretty damn good these days. And soon you'll have batteries that will outlast the vehicle they're put into. OK, they can always be improved, but they are a viable proposition already now. Mind you, I wouldn't put it past Dyson to come up with something a little radical and better. But he's never yet done the seemingly impossible. He's certainly the master of the unlikely though.

James Dyson bought Hullavington airfield in north Wiltshire (just south of Malmesbury where the vacuums were developed) to develop his electric car, so expect something from that directional the not-too-distant future.

Alternative version. It was meant to produce heat, not power. The backers pulled out when they said it didn't live up to its claim. The court case was settled "with prejudice" which just meant both parties dropped the suit. Rossi (previously convicted for fraud and jailed for dumping 70,000 tonnes of toxic waste in a previous failed attempt at a fabulous new technology) said that the case was intended purely to protect his IP - no money involved.

Sources (I couldn't be bothered to go deep):

    http://coldfusion3.com/category/rossi

Given the first one didn't convince his backers that there was ANY yield, his work's cut out to create a larger yield. You'll find that the objections come from scientists. Not just those backed by oil companies. Just scientists. The ones who rely on peer-reviewed work as a starting point.

I hope I'm wrong. I'd love a source of low cost, low emissions power. Andrea Rossi will not be the source.

Yes I've read that stuff too.
There is a distinction about the criticism. The scientists with careers to lose tend to be the critics. The scientists who have retired and no longer have careers to lose tend to be supportive. Which kind of makes one think that the truth is being abandoned here.
On the subject of Rossi. He's about to demonstrate his newer technology on Friday. Yes, he certainly has a chequered history, but he's done his time. If he has something, then there's little point in doubting it because of his past. Just a few days and we'll see.

I went deep, it was fun/weird. He obviously just wired up the "starter" to heat it. Here's a good summary. https://rationalwiki.org/wiki/Energy_Catalyzer

It looks plausible. In the past he kept people away from a demonstration end refused them permission even to video let alone measure anything. The guy's a charlatan.

Makes me think they are maybe out of touch. Then again, I tend to think that grand scientific conspiracies to keep useful technologies out of public view are generally utterly alien to the way science works outside novels and films.

I'm reminded of a quote (I'm paraphrasing, as I heard it rather than saw it written down) by Barry Marshall, a true "lone voice" scientist who fought the scientific consensus and ended up with a Nobel prize. He says he's now plagued by lone voice scientists and tells them "Keep going, keep pushing. If you're right, they'll have to listen. However, just because occasionally a lone voice is right, that doesn't mean that being a lone voice makes you right"

We'll see. I have no doubt whatsoever that it won't work and the same people will be claiming it'll work next time. He got $11m from his last marks for running a test, so I'm sure he's happy to continue making a good living from "tests".

Anyone want to buy a bridge?

Just on the train to Gatwick for a quick jaunt over to Nice for my godson’s 18th Birthday. I booked my flight back a day early so I could get to the Everton game.

What a strange decision that feels!

    Very sad. Loved that programme!

So Bob Ferris has gone to the big stage in the sky and Bob Mugabe has gone ...... where? Tax exile?

Just discovered that there will be another episode of Car Share in the New Year to finish the greatest love story since Romeo and Juliet (though hopefully they won't both die).
