It looks like Colonel Gaddafi's 41 year reign in Libya is coming to an end. But what will happen to the Mad Dog of the Middle East?

I was sent this on Friday, not sure how true it is.

    Gaddafi may be leaving Libya

Libyan leader Moammar Gaddafi may be preparing to flee the country, according to reports released by NBC News.

The news station was informed by US officials that intelligence suggests Gaddafi is planning to evacuate Libya along with his family, fleeing to Tunisia where he may be granted exile.

Gaddafi's main headquarters of Bab al-Aziziya have recently once again been under fire with bombs falling in the nearby vicinity. "Gaddafi's forces are weakened", commented the US Defence Secretary Leon Panetta.

UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon meanwhile criticised the situation in Libya, stating he was "deeply concerned by reports of the unacceptably large number of civilian casualties".

In Tripoli, Libyan Prime Minister Al-Baghdadi Ali Al-Mahmoudi assured that the government was in negotiations with the rebels

    Hello Monaco.

This could be true, I suppose, and fleeing certainly feels like the kind of thing someone may choose to do as their world falls apart around them - I'd certainly make a bolt for it. I'm still left wondering, however, if the man will be sane enough to realise that his rule has come to an end? In interviews, writings and outward appearance, after all, he very often gives a near perfect impression of being deluded to the point of a madness. Whether he is actually capable of recognising and processing a different reality, then, may reasonably be up for debate.

Who knows? He may still be feverishly planning a last hurrah as the rebels kick down his front door. Here's hoping.

I find it hard to believe that Tunisia would take him in though.

I wouldn't find it hard to believe if Venezuela or North Korea took him in or even Zimbabwe. In fact, there will probably be a few countries that would take him in, just surely not North African ones.

I think he will go to a country that will tell the International criminal court to stick it when they come calling for his extradition, just like Sudan's leader did.

Just been sent this at work.

Libya fights while Gaddafi regime crumbles

The 41-year regime of Libyan leader Colonel Muammar Gaddafi is collapsing whilst heavy fighting continues in Tripoli, with rebel forces advancing and capturing his son, Seif al-Islam.

A spokesman for the EU, which is actively planning for a Libya after Gaddafi, commented; "We seem to be witnessing the last moments of the Gaddafi regime and we call on Gaddafi to step down without further delay and avoid further bloodshed".

The rebels in Tripoli on Sunday offered to grant safe passage to Gaddafi and his family if they agreed to exit the country, further claiming that he had called for talks with the National Transitional Council amid reports that his presidential guard had also surrendered to the rebels.

The rebel council also stated that, should the regime fall, it wants officials to remain in their positions to help maintain law and order in the city, despite fears of a witch hunt against regime loyalists.

Whilst the crowd celebrated in Tripoli's Green Square, Gaddafi and his forces remained defiant, with an estimated 15-20% of the capital still falling under his control.

The rapid advance of the rebel forces into Tripoli, which was supported by NATO aerial bombardment, had followed a series of advances in strategic towns around the capital. A White House spokesperson, whilst pledging to aid Libya's transition to democracy post-Gaddafi, nevertheless commented; "The future of Libya is now in the hands of the Libyan people".

UK Prime Minister David Cameron also anticipates the end of Gaddafi's regime, and will chair a meeting of defence and intelligence officials to discuss the situation in Libya today.

Meanwhile, Brent crude oil dropped by 2.8% to USD 105.54 a barrel whilst oil traders anticipated an increase in Libyan oil production

Fair point. When I said "I find it hard to believe (or accept) that anyone would take him in", however, this was merely an emphasis on any revulsion I may feel, not an actual declaration of unbreakable disbelief. I felt this was fairly obvious.

Like you, perhaps, I long ago ceased to be surprised by the actions of human beings and find that even the most stunningly hateful things are depressingly easy to believe of other people. (Whilst anything hateful I ever do, of course, is merely an aberration and should in no way whatsoever be held against me. Fair's fair.)

I'm sure Gaddaffi's son played for Perugia in Serie A about 10 years ago. The chairman signed him, a Swedish woman (who never actually played) and sacked a South Korean player for scoring a goal against Italy in the World Cup. That's a ****ing mental dictator.

Do we move on to Syria since they have a tyrant of a similar ilk or is their oil production not as much of a strategic advantage to western economies?
