Chris Wilder's name came up in a discussion with some local coaches / scouts as a possible future manager at a Totton match I attended. Both individuals had dealings with Saints. I got the impression that they believed he was on Southampton's radar although I feel that is affection for Sheffield Utd and his current level of success there will mean any more is going to be unlikely.
Sorry Ian, there is no way Oriol was anything like the player he was last season. Do you not think the loss of Puel/Mane/Victor diluted the effectiveness of the squad?
Quality, accuses me of being personal then calls me an armchair supporter in the same post And I've explained the differences between the two which you have failed to do. 3 games
Puel was a good manager with a poor squad. Pellegrino is a poor manager with a poor squad. How I feel anyways
I called him As one for the very top, before he'd managed his first game at Sheff Utd. As Ian says in the next post, it would Be very hard to take him From There as he is a huge Blades fan, still Lives in the city and drinks with his mates on a Sunday night.
I was totally wrong, I said "there's no way the club will do something so stupid as change manager again".
Personally i usually look backward with signings as to who's responsible. players are scouted over a length of time with the manager in mind. So i would put a lot of credit for Lemina and Hoedt on Puel as thats who i think they were scouted for, while i think of Redmond and Boufal as being players scouted to fill the voids Koeman had at AM and RM. and why i think Koeman would do much better with them. Exceptions for players like Tadic, Pelle and Pied of course, who the manager had scouted at the previous club.
I assume you mean Pelle? Of course, it affected the squad. Unfortunately, the additions we brought in to replace them have not been as affective and you would struggle to argue that any of the players brought in under Puel added anything to the squad or consistently enhanced our performances. I am more confident that any additions brought in after Christmas will be of a calibre to improve the squad that I would have been last season. I did argue last season that Claude was dealt a poor hand even if I think his changes in the style of football were too radical. There was no need to invent the wheel and, I believe , this is why we have struggled. If it is not broken, there is no need to meddle. This was the crux of my issue with Puel. Had we acquired players that enhanced the squad and maintained the style of football we had been playing, Claude would still be there and (most) Saints fans would have been happy. As it is, the system was broken and Pellegrino has the task of re-building it. This is why I cut him more slack that Puel.
VM Not sure I agree. I think Puel would have been familiar with Boufal through French football. He had also worked with Pied previously. You may be right about Redmond as we had been tracking him for some while. I cannot comment about Hoedt (wonder if Koeman was aware of him first?) but think the credit for Lemina has got to go to Pelligrino. Boufal is an enigma. You can see he has got skill but he seems to find it hard to play in our system. He has looked better now that he has come inside. I would like to see him given a run but you get the impression he is the kind of player who will be moved on and work wonders in Europe. Not convinced that we will ever see the best of him but would like to be proved wrong.
Should read:- "Quality. He accuses me of being personal and then calls me an armchair supporter in the same post. Also, I have explained the differences between the two which you have failed to do." Lessons in English?
Staking your claim of me making it personal really well here pal Always know when someone has nothing to say when they resort to English/grammar
Why does Pellegrino get the credit for Lemina? What evidence is there that he was "his" man and not Les Reed's? Has Lemina played under him before? He want even in the same league. There may well be a history, so I am happy to be put straight on that.
From 2015. https://www.101greatgoals.com/blog/...man-united-bound-morgan-schneiderlin-lequipe/ I think the board deserve most credit for Lemina You could be right about Boufal, but it just seems like such a un-Puel like signing and like he would fit really well into Koemans old systems.
How long will it take you to realise that the manager doesn’t sign the players at Saints. He has a say, but players are signed by committee.
You had all that by the 27th August? You should be our next coach. We didn't replace Pelle - I'd guess 99% of fans blame Les Reed for that. Do you blame Puel? So the players are going back to the system that we had before, where a lot of them knew it. Shouldn't be too hard to fix, but that doesn't seem to be happening. Can you tell Me what style we are trying to play because I can't see it? Why are you not criticising MP2 for not bringing in the creative player most said was needed or the forward to replace Jay? Could it be because the board and scouting team have that responsibility? He joined roughly the same time as Puel. Similar time to assess, yet you'll give MP2 more time. The big thing for me is your obsession with style of play now compared to last season. We looked more likely last season than we do this. Not by much, but by enough and at least Puel seemed to have us defensively well drilled.
LLT I think it differs at various clubs. My understanding is that the contractual issues are dealt with by each club's equivalent of Les Reed with the scouts reporting back. I believe that managers will have a shopping list of who they want to sign albeit it is obviously going to done through whatever each cub's protocol is. Wondered of you had read Michael Calvin's "The nowhere men" which outlines how the scouting / recruitment process works. As I understand it, the systems vary with clubs but the managers will be the ones suggesting names if there is someone they particularly fancy. I thought that there was a comment by Claude Puel regarding being familiar with Boufal before he was signed. I might be wrong, but I understood that Puel was already familiar with him. He had, of course, previously worked with Pied.
Ah so the famous Black Box is a myth? The head hunting of our chief scout by Spurs to recreate our network just a scam as really he was a top chef? I thought (as convenient as you "understood") that we were tracking Boufal before he got injured... which is when Koeman was in charge. Many, many times Les Reed has explained how we do it. I'm surprised your can't recall the details from any of those occasions.
