I cannot understand why people think that the EU is the answer to everything. Just look at the countries that have struggled under the Euro. Italy/Spain/Ireland/Portugal/Greece and so on. It is an elitist club that is governed by Germany. They and France are the only winners. Seriously people need to wise up. We survived before the EU and we will after. Yes, there will be problems ahead but the EU will have problems also. Mass immigration, lack of jobs for skilled workers and graduates. Look at election results in Austria/Holland/France/Germany and the rise of the far right and extremism. They keep going on about the 27 but many of those countries just bring the thing down. Take Greece the prime example of what the EU stands for. It's a disaster of a country financially. Sadly I had some great holidays there and wish it all the best. The EU is run by undemocratic muppets in Brussels and I don't want to be part of a failing club. The only reason they are making it hard for us to leave is because they know it will fall apart when we have gone. No more Uk money bailing out all those 27. Not here to preach and people can vote for what they like. I just don't like 'remoaners' telling us that we are all thick racists with our head in the sand because a result never went their way.
Where there is uncertainty - and of course, Brexit has caused that and it will persist until something is resolved on the current negotiations - business will have to hedge their bets. They will open offices in the EU and then await outcomes. It's simply insurance. The UK government should not let talks spin out too long. Personally, I think next month is the watershed - From what I've heard, I don't think the UK should wait until March.
Hope it does reform There is a thick racist mentality is most countries. The result is accepted by me 100% the actual result of 52/48 is the concern and any of the 52 that think the 48 are wrong is where the divide is You don’t need to be clever about that The UK has not really had to rebuild itself in recent history the French and Germans certainly deserve their standings imo
The 48% are not wrong as the 52% are not right. There are no right or wrongs. It was a democratic vote to leave the EU and the result was to leave. It doesn't matter by how many the vote was, that is irrelevant. I have seen elections where a candidate has won by a few votes, does that mean we should keep running it until the result is different? So that the ones that 'lost' can get their wish? It would be chaos. I think the divide was caused by some remainers calling all Brexit voters racist, thick blah blah blah. Seriously if the result had gone the other way I would have accepted it and moved on. The barrage of abuse on social media against it was disgusting. That's why there is a divide and people get angry. I don't like Labour and think when in power they always ruin our economy (he says with a smile thinking of May as PM ) but I accepted it and got on with it. Agree, Now I am vocal towards Blair for what he did to our troops but at the time I didn't flood the internet saying it was the end of the World or got nasty because people voted Labour.
Nope don’t agree if the actual result was 70/30 for example I think you would feel a different from the UK. The result stands its history 52/48 and that is any vote on any subject in any world would always generate a more intense divide and mood This is all just fluff and will continue to be so If Brexit fell through you would still have exactly the same problem but reversed
All any of us can hope for imo is political reform in the UK The narrow minded views of the Brexiteers and people who were just as idiotic during the pre and post vote fuels my anger so here we are. I stand that I will be extremely cross if the cost of all this affects me... but maybe that’s the desired fuel we are all forced to use to bring change to both sides. I love change by the way
Ellers, you make salient points which were the basis for me wanting the UK to leave the EU. I was not allowed to vote as I am totally disenfranchised from ALL countries (ironic heh, when we are trying to democratise everyone else!) so it was purely as a voyeur. I was convinced that the UK would be sufficiently proffesional to come out relatively well and that this pull out would serve as the necessary jolt to precipitate much needed EU reform. The concept of the EU is valid and morally well founded, however, much like everything else in life, the implementation of the concept is left to humans who have their obvious own agendas and prior entrenched positions. My own dissapointment in all this is that it appears, at this stage anyway, that the incompetence and under preparation from the UK has further emboldened those within the EU that a strong majority of Europe wanted reigned in. The obvious move towards the right is a direct cry against this whole pedantic, procrastinating, judgemental, over inflated ego population of EU politicians and lawyers who from their pulpits, believe everything they say to be Gospel - believe me, they are now further entrenched when they see the stink being created by the UK "negotiating teams". The UK is still so divided on this that it is unlikely that this position is going to change. May and her cohorts have made sooooo many rookie negotiation mistakes it beggars belief. What needs to change is the creation of a strong, communicative team led by a neutral. This neutral needs to be able to have sufficient back up to counter the current "slice and dice" negotiation tactic employed by the EU team. This will be difficult but can be quickly achieved by bringing in the very best from the respective Industries. Time is still with the UK to do this as long as it can get the right people - currently this looks a forlorn hope and I genuinely believe that a Lose/Lose result is in the offing. The borders that some want put up can never be taken away - once their down, their effectively down, the trading patterns that are in place will never be taken away, just not possible. The changes will be limited to negative but I can assure you of one thing - the very same people of Europe that share the greatest burdens today, will still be carrying them in 5/10 years, once this has been analysed. It is really just such a shame but should only have been expected when we saw the calibre of politicians from all sides.
May be I don’t want my future to be in your hands. What’s your source of authority anyway, your special expertise? We just look at the same stuff and interpret it in different ways. One drug will make you very high, another the reverse. Why trust one drug more than another? Camberwell carrots for all! Do they have an office in the City of London, like Northern Rock, Lloyds, RBS and Lehman Brothers? You can trust anyone in the City, because it’s the best. Apparently. Bitcoin is a fantastic example of the human capacity to collectively believe in something that doesn’t exist, and then have confidence in it. Of course all currencies are essentially like that, but at least with the Bulgarian Lev you can try to guess the future value by looking at economic performance etc, and there is a transparent central authority accountable for it. With Bitcoin it is purely confidence. It’s a Ponzi scheme that relies on collective delusion rather than fraud. The ‘mining’ required to generate bitcoins consumes the same amount of electricity as Ecuador every year. It’s popularity is driven by anonymity, trading in illegal goods and services and presumably tax evasion. In September the CEO of JP Morgan described it as a fraud and said he would sack anyone in his firm found trading it. However, it’s value, though a bit volatile, has rocketed and I reckon crypto currencies are here to stay. So if none of the above bothers you and you are looking to get some of your assets out of sterling (now why would that be) and are happy to accept high risk for high returns go for it. Gold, $ or € would be alternatives.
Apologies, didn’t realise you were that thin skinned. I like the view from my pedestal. Bitcoin looks dodgy but potentially hugely profitable to me. I won’t be investing.
I'm not thin-skinned. Re Bitcoin...the reason I asked is I have seen it go from £400 to £6000 in a short time. I also read that they reckon it will hit 10K. Saying that, this week I saw £500 get wiped off the price in 2 days. Don't know enough about it tbh. I just keep hearing that lots of people are making money from it. I probably would have only bought 1 coin anyway because of the risk. knowing my luck if I invest it will crash and if I don't it will do well.
In other news......and sorry to be self indulgent....but I got my job !! So as long as I pass a driving assessment next week and medical/criminal record/previous employment checks...as of the 15th January I will be a a Trainee Emergency Ambulance Crew member for London Ambulance Service....entailing 22 weeks of solid study, weekly testing and blue light driving. Dunno if I’m gonna pass or not but I’m gonna give it my best shot. To say I’m happy is a massive understatement (Sorry to put it on this thread but a few on here wished me luck earlier in the week)
Great to hear, Staines. I don't know what takes the greater skill, blue light driving or dealing with the victim at the other end, but both are invaluable to society. Good luck with the training and the assessment
That's the Michael Blomberg who recently correctly said Brexit is the single stupidest thing any country has ever done, apart from elect Trump President.
It may have been but he has made a lot of money and knows finance... so he can say what he wants. We all make mistakes. Enough have been made by the EU.
