And now a penalty to Denmark..... Bendtner to take it and makes it 5 .........a reasonable reflection on the Danes superiority...... ......and it all started so well.....
Ireland go one up and then sit back and let the Danes come at them. Denmark go 2-1 up and still take the game to the Irish. One man up front encourages the opposition to come at you. The Danes were different class tonight and deserved the win. How much was that down to the Irish starting line up?
If someone had told me tonight's scores would be 0-0 and 1-5, I think I might have gone along with them - but not this way round.
Not so much the starting line up although maybe Long should have started instaed off Murphy, but the HT substitutions caused a lot of the problems by taking off his defensive holding midfielders to put on a winger and an attacking midfielder leaving the Danish midfield to stroll through at will......
Sorry to interrupt the wake (hard luck you Irish boys), but England have just held Brazil 0-0 as they did Germany. Only friendlies I know, but the youngsters have really shown they can step up. Gomes was absolutely fantastic in the back 3 tonight and rightly named as England's MOM. Southgate has got it right playing this system, as England have now looked much better defensively in the last two games (friendlies........I know I know!!) Again England could have pinched it in the last minute and Brazil, with their strongest side produced very few chances, despite some lovely touches and loads of possession. IF we can get everyone fit and play more creativity in midfield we may just surprise a few, as the pace going forward will always trouble anyone.
Steady on it was a good result but we need to learn learn to control the ball and play triangles. If England had of nicked it then overall never deserved but you earn the right to nick any game Stones was outstanding imo Love the youngsters... Solly won’t be long until he gets his chance either
Not exactly a wake Col, think there's only Kerry on here who'll be drowning his sorrows........ Good to know that England have the bones of a decent side, now is this world cup coming 4 years too soon for the youngsters to be ready? It would be encouraging if Southgate kept faith with them all the way into the Finals as they can play without any fear or expectation.....
We would have been much better in possession with our first choice midfield. The youngsters have been superb, Gomes was outstanding against a front 3 of Neymar, Jesus and Courtinio, two of which then replaced with Firmino and William. At least now England are trying to play out from the back and trying to play the game in that way. I didn't say we were now world beaters. i said we may surprise a few people, mainly on here.
I would have played Long with Murphy. Just felt they could have shown a bit more ambition from the off.
Problem then is that they would have been over run in midfield from the start as the Danes initially set up 352. O'Neill shouldn't have taken Meyler off at HT as he was anchoring the midfield, the space the Danes had for the 3rd goal was unreal.........still they did play well and thoroughly deserved victory.
