Former BBC classified football results announcer Tim Gudgin dies at the age of 87 after spending 16 years as 'the voice of football' for fans Remember my Dad sitting in front of the TV with his Littlewoods coupon whilst this guy read out the results each Saturday, those were the days when everyone played at 3.00 pm. Always ended up with my Dad saying "Bugger, back to work on Monday"
Seems I remember him, possibly around the time the man called Dikie Davis presenting sport news from 1500 hours on Saturday (though I am not certain.
I think the chap I remember most reading the results was James Alexander Gordon. You could tell by the tone of his voice whether it was going to be a win, draw or loss. A late RIP to him too
It was James Alexander Gordon in the 1960's that I remember because he was probably the first to read out the pools coupon results. I remember hearing names like Stenhousemuir and Heart of Midlothian and thinking they sounded really unusual names to be actual places.
Stenhousemuir is a place and Hearts are based in the 'heart' of Midlothian. Doesn't really matter if they are actual places or not. The point being as a child I thought all football teams names were places, hence the mystery and magicality of listening to the pools results.
****ing hell, Johnners. I thought you understood my humour by now. They're north of Hadrian's Wall, so don't count as real places
Frogs (bar Gerard), Convicts (bar Craig Johnston) and Sweaties (ex-managers and players excluded, of course)
