I absolutely agree. Im not saying the officials are bad, I think there are some very good referees out there, but unfortunately human error is quite prevalent in football and the officials need to be assisted in decisions. VAR will hopefully sort this out.

100%. Video technology is a no brainer for me. Referee's are only human and they feel the pressure just as much as players.

I also think that the game is so much more athletic now that at its peak, it is difficult for some referees (not all) to keep up when the real pace hits.

As it happens I think it will too. And as they get used to it they'll implement it better and better.

Trouble is players are taught to cheat a lot more using elbows and arms because it is near on impossible for a ref to see anything when two players have their back to him. Gone is the era of when when teams used to turn out with the will to just score more goals than their opponents. The game of football as I remember it is so stifled today.

Come on Beddy. You'll tell me Jack Charlton and Norman Hunter weren't told to cheat next!

Bite your legs hunter, now there was a hard man........ the point I’m making though.......is yes of course there was pulling and tugging going on. If that was part of your game so be it..........However they are actually taught how to cheat and get away with it these days. As if that was part and parcel of the game. Sad to see in my eyes.

Sorry Beddy, you are wearing your "better in my day" glasses. They were "taught" or "told to do it" .... Don Revie purposefully set that team up to be nasty and bend the rules.

You'll tell me Franny Lee didn't dive on purpose next and it was just that his footwear wasn't very good.

You can't have "if it was part of your game, so be it" for then but now it's cheating.

Not overly keen on technology myself. Still think there's a lot of unanswered questions about it tbh.

I know this is hugely unpopular but I think people should just accept mistakes are made and focus on how to improve refereeing standards instead.

100% agree. Unfortunately money has become such a major influence within the game, on & off, officials decision can (or perceived to) cost clubs / players literally £M's.

I was at the Dell, when Joe Jordan was leading our front line.
At one point he, and the centre back marking him, were running towards the East Stand, when Jordan just elbowed the defender full in the face, and got away with it, as it wasn’t seen by the officials.
That was the first time I was ever ashamed to be a Saints supporter.
But, as you point out, Leeds Utd bred dirty, cheating players, and he was one of their products, at the time Revie was still in charge.

No fats it wasn’t better in my day it was still cheating. In my opinion from about the late 60s on. The training changed and became it was expected in given circumstances to cheat. The youngsters were actually trained how to............later when my sons became involved around the end of the 70s I was horrified to hear what the professional trainers where teaching them and the other youngsters.

I was ashamed that Jordan was in the team. Could never forgive him for conning the ref into giving a penalty, and his celebration when it was awarded. For anyone who didn't see it:

    Obnoxious little ****.

BTW, someone tell Helen not to look at this link. I was living in Wales at the time, and friends from those days still talk about it!

Bit worried now, as he may realise that it is not normal that he doesn't get passes from teammates and start looking around for new teammates

Is there anywhere to watch it? I suspect this and the ROI v Denmark games will be more interesting than the other two European play-offs. Not saying exciting, but definitely competitive!
