Checkatrade Trophy: Three Sunderland fans make trip to Grimsby Town

Grimsby Town tweeted a picture of the dedicated Sunderland fans
Just three Sunderland fans made the 154-mile journey down the east coast to watch their Under-21s in the Checkatrade Trophy, according to hosts Grimsby Town.

Sunderland, who were relegated from the Premier League last season, are bottom of the Championship and managerless, after sackingSimon Grayson on 31 October after 18 games in charge.

Grimsby fans also stayed away from the game at Blundell Park, with the League Two side tweeting that their attendance was 248, way down on a typical crowd of more than 4,000.

There was nothing riding on the Northern Section Group H game as neither team could qualify for the knockout stages.

Although Grimsby tweeted that there were only three away supporters, the Sunderland Echo more than doubled that figure and reported that seven fans made the trip.

Former England midfielder Jack Rodwell and FA Cup winner Callum McManaman were in the Sunderland team who won 7-6 on penalties, with Sean McAllister missing the decisive spot-kick for the Mariners.

The Group H game had finished 1-1 after 90 minutes, with JJ Hooper putting Grimsby ahead from the penalty spot, before Donald Love equalised a minute later.

Elsewhere, Bury beat Stoke 3-1, Fleetwood were 2-1 winners against Carlisle United and Swindon Town won 4-2 at Bristol Rovers.

    Wow I'm famous :emoticon-0103-cool:

Though we definitely didn't travel 154 miles to get there like and there were some more sunderland fans further down the stand who had travelled.

Match report, it was freezing, the game was **** but i got to see us win on penalties.

I don't think you could come up with a scenario for a more pointless and less interesting game to attend, wouldn't be surprised if nobody had gone at all. Including the home fans.

Rodwell had a fairly steady game, made a couple of decent tackles but nearly played us into trouble a bit in the first half after that started reverting to lumping it forward to no one. Beadling was the one organising the defence, he looked decent.

Mcmanaman was in and out of the game, he had a couple of decent moments but didn't influence the game enough for me.

Love had a good game, solid enough in defence and lots of energy going forward. Galloway fairly similar but not as impressive as Love.

We played some nice keep ball in the middle of the park at times but didn't create a great deal. It wasn't a good game and to be honest no one on either side really stood out.

Did Rodwell pay Centre back or centre mid?

Also did Mcmanaman play on the left with Molyneux on the right?

Thanks for the info Grimsby, shame about the game, and once again Beadling gets the ratings, strangehow he never gets a look in, even when we are so low in quality and numbers in that very area.
