I have a simplistic view that is too idealist. If banning guns could save up to 10 innocent lives a year why wouldn't you do it? Imagine if one of those was your family and you knew that it could of been stopped. Poor innocent people keep dieing and I cant even attempt to imagine the pain their families are going through.
Everyone has this perception that they can become a hero and save lives because they are carrying a gun, it rarely ever happens, the majority of shooters are taken out by the police or more likely themselves. The chance of them ever having to stop an attacker are minuscule, even then they don't know if they'd have the skill or nerve to do it under pressure. I'm sure his uncle-in-law might say no one would ever take his guns but I doubt he'd shoot a law enforcement official that came to take them away if they were to become illegal. If he did shoot him then he becomes an example of why people shouldn't have guns in the first place.
The Second Amendment states "A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed." A regulated militia is quite obviously not necessary for the security of a free state and it's barely regulated anyway. Maybe they could amended it to state "A well regulated Militia is not really necessary to the security of a free State, but as we're a bit daft and insist on the right for people to keep and bear Arms, can we at least agree that any regular member of the community who buys an assault rifle is quite obviously a ****?"
There was obviously a time when having the people armed was a very good defence mechanism, but that idea became a bit obsolete some time around August 1945. Now it's just some silly right to have a dick comparing competition. And some people use their dicks for questionable purposes.
So, since then France, Poland, Russia, Portugal, Spain, Italy, Germany, Finland, Greece, Belgium, Sweden, Lithuania, Romania, Hungary and others have been invaded, many more than once. But Switzerland hasn't. Seems to work.
Yes, I'm sure the prime reason all those countries didn't invade because they knew everyone had a rifle kicking about in the loft somewhere. Even Switzerland think there's no point in having a militia, they've wound their military down to almost nothing.
